Living as God's Treasured People

The concept of living as God's treasured people is deeply rooted in the biblical narrative, reflecting the unique relationship between God and His chosen people. This theme is woven throughout both the Old and New Testaments, emphasizing the identity, responsibilities, and blessings associated with being set apart for God's purposes.

Old Testament Foundations

The idea of being God's treasured possession is first introduced in the context of the covenant relationship between God and Israel. In Exodus 19:5-6 , God declares to the Israelites, "Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you will be My treasured possession out of all the nations—for the whole earth is Mine. And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." This passage highlights the conditional nature of this treasured status, contingent upon obedience and covenant faithfulness.

Deuteronomy further elaborates on this theme, as Moses reminds the Israelites of their unique status. In Deuteronomy 7:6 , it is written, "For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His prized possession, above all peoples on the face of the earth." This selection is not based on Israel's merit but on God's love and faithfulness to His promises to the patriarchs.

Responsibilities and Identity

Being God's treasured people carries significant responsibilities. The Israelites were called to live in a manner that reflected God's holiness and righteousness. Leviticus 20:26 states, "You are to be holy to Me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be My own." This call to holiness is a recurring theme, underscoring the expectation that God's people would embody His character and values.

The identity of God's people as a "kingdom of priests" implies a mediatory role between God and the nations. They were to be a light to the Gentiles, demonstrating God's wisdom and justice through their obedience to His laws. This priestly function is further emphasized in Isaiah 61:6 , "But you will be called the priests of the LORD; they will speak of you as ministers of our God."

New Testament Continuation

In the New Testament, the concept of God's treasured people is expanded to include all who are in Christ, transcending ethnic and cultural boundaries. The Apostle Peter echoes the language of Exodus in 1 Peter 2:9 , "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." This passage affirms the continuity of God's plan and the inclusion of Gentiles into the covenant community.

The responsibilities of God's people remain consistent, with an emphasis on living out the gospel and bearing witness to Christ. Ephesians 2:10 states, "For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life." Believers are called to live in a way that reflects their new identity in Christ, marked by love, service, and holiness.

Blessings and Promises

Living as God's treasured people comes with the assurance of His presence, protection, and provision. In the Old Testament, God promises to bless Israel if they remain faithful to the covenant (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). Similarly, in the New Testament, believers are assured of spiritual blessings in Christ, as articulated in Ephesians 1:3 , "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms."

The ultimate promise for God's treasured people is eternal life and communion with Him. Revelation 21:3 captures this hope: "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying: 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man, and He will dwell with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.'" This eschatological vision underscores the culmination of God's redemptive plan for His treasured people.
