Living as God's Inheritance

The concept of living as God's inheritance is deeply rooted in the biblical narrative, reflecting the intimate relationship between God and His people. This theme is woven throughout Scripture, emphasizing the unique status and responsibilities of believers as God's chosen possession.

Old Testament Foundations

The idea of God's people as His inheritance is first introduced in the Old Testament. In Deuteronomy 32:9 , it is written, "But the LORD’s portion is His people, Jacob His allotted inheritance." Here, the Israelites are depicted as God's special possession, chosen from among the nations to be His own. This selection is not based on their merit but on God's sovereign choice and love (Deuteronomy 7:6-8).

The inheritance motif is further developed in the context of the Promised Land. The land of Canaan, promised to Abraham and his descendants, symbolizes the tangible expression of God's covenantal relationship with Israel. As the Israelites enter and possess the land, they are reminded that it is a gift from God, and they are to live in it according to His statutes and commandments (Leviticus 25:23).

New Testament Fulfillment

In the New Testament, the concept of God's inheritance is expanded to include all believers in Christ, both Jew and Gentile. The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 1:11-14 , "In Him we were also chosen as God’s own, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything by the counsel of His will, in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, would be for the praise of His glory. And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the pledge of our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession, to the praise of His glory."

This passage highlights the spiritual inheritance believers receive through faith in Christ. The Holy Spirit serves as a guarantee of this inheritance, marking believers as God's own and assuring them of their future redemption. The inheritance is not merely a future hope but a present reality, as believers are called to live in a manner worthy of their calling (Ephesians 4:1).

Living as God's Inheritance

Living as God's inheritance involves both privilege and responsibility. Believers are called to reflect God's character and holiness in their daily lives. In 1 Peter 2:9 , the apostle Peter describes believers as "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." This identity calls for a life of worship, service, and witness to the world.

Moreover, living as God's inheritance means recognizing the communal aspect of this identity. Believers are part of the body of Christ, the church, which is described as God's household and temple (Ephesians 2:19-22). This communal identity emphasizes unity, love, and mutual edification among believers, as they together reflect God's glory.

Eschatological Hope

The full realization of living as God's inheritance will be consummated in the eschaton, when believers will inherit the kingdom prepared for them from the foundation of the world (Matthew 25:34). Revelation 21:7 promises, "The one who overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he will be My son." This future hope motivates believers to persevere in faith and godliness, looking forward to the day when they will fully experience the blessings of their inheritance in the presence of God.
