Kindness

Kindness is a fundamental attribute of God and a virtue that believers are called to emulate. In the Bible, kindness is often associated with love, mercy, and compassion. It is an expression of God's character and a fruit of the Spirit that should be evident in the lives of Christians.

The Hebrew word often translated as "kindness" is "chesed," which conveys a sense of steadfast love, loyalty, and mercy. In the New Testament, the Greek word "chrēstotēs" is used, which means goodness, kindness, or gentleness.

Biblical Examples of Kindness:

1. God's Kindness: God's kindness is evident throughout Scripture. In the Old Testament, God shows kindness to His people by delivering them from their enemies and providing for their needs. In the New Testament, God's ultimate act of kindness is demonstrated through the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. Titus 3:4-5 states, "But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit."

2. Human Kindness: Believers are called to show kindness to others as a reflection of God's love. Ephesians 4:32 instructs, "Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you." The account of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) is a powerful illustration of kindness, where a Samaritan helps a wounded man, demonstrating love and compassion across cultural boundaries.

3. Ruth and Boaz: The Book of Ruth provides a beautiful example of kindness in action. Ruth shows kindness to her mother-in-law Naomi by staying with her and providing for her. Boaz, in turn, shows kindness to Ruth by allowing her to glean in his fields and ultimately marrying her, ensuring her and Naomi's security.

Favor

Favor in the Bible often refers to the grace, approval, or blessing of God. It is an unmerited gift that God bestows upon individuals, often resulting in protection, provision, and success. Favor is closely linked to God's kindness and is a manifestation of His grace.

Biblical Examples of Favor:

1. Noah: Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord amidst a corrupt generation. Genesis 6:8 states, "But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD." As a result, Noah and his family were spared from the flood, highlighting God's grace and protection.

2. Mary, the Mother of Jesus: Mary was chosen to be the mother of Jesus because she found favor with God. Luke 1:30 records the angel's words to her: "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God." This favor resulted in her playing a pivotal role in God's redemptive plan.

3. Joseph: Joseph experienced God's favor throughout his life, despite facing numerous trials. Genesis 39:21 notes, "But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, granting him favor in the eyes of the prison warden." God's favor ultimately led to Joseph's rise to power in Egypt, where he was able to save many lives during a famine.

Living in Kindness and Favor:

Believers are encouraged to seek God's favor and to live lives marked by kindness. Proverbs 3:3-4 advises, "Let kindness and truth never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will find favor and high regard in the sight of God and man." This passage underscores the importance of embodying kindness and truth as a means of experiencing God's favor and gaining the respect of others.
