Compassion of Jesus

The compassion of Jesus is a central theme in the Gospels, reflecting His deep love and empathy for humanity. This compassion is evident in His interactions with individuals and crowds, as He responds to their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The Greek word often translated as "compassion" in the New Testament is "splagchnizomai," which conveys a deep, visceral feeling of sympathy and mercy.

One of the most poignant examples of Jesus' compassion is found in Matthew 9:36: "When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." Here, Jesus perceives the spiritual and physical plight of the people, prompting Him to teach, heal, and guide them.

In the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus' compassion is again highlighted. In Matthew 14:14, it is written, "When He stepped ashore and saw a large crowd, He had compassion on them and healed their sick." In Matthew 8:16-17, it is recorded, "When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'He took on our infirmities and carried our diseases.'"
