Topical Encyclopedia IntercessionIntercession is the act of intervening or mediating on behalf of another, particularly through prayer. In the biblical context, intercession is a significant aspect of the believer's spiritual life, where one pleads with God for the needs of others. The Bible presents numerous examples of intercessory prayer, highlighting its importance and efficacy. One of the earliest examples of intercession is found in the life of Abraham. In Genesis 18:22-33, Abraham intercedes for the city of Sodom, pleading with God to spare the city if righteous people can be found within it. This passage illustrates the boldness and persistence that often characterize intercessory prayer. Moses is another prominent intercessor in the Old Testament. In Exodus 32:11-14, after the Israelites sinned by worshiping the golden calf, Moses intercedes on their behalf, imploring God to relent from His anger and not destroy them. Moses' intercession is marked by his appeal to God's promises and character, demonstrating the deep relationship between the intercessor and God. The New Testament continues to emphasize the role of intercession. Jesus Christ is the ultimate intercessor, as seen in His high priestly prayer in John 17, where He prays for His disciples and all future believers. Hebrews 7:25 states, "Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them." This verse underscores the ongoing intercessory work of Christ on behalf of believers. Believers are also called to intercede for others. In 1 Timothy 2:1, Paul urges, "First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone." This exhortation highlights the communal aspect of intercession, where the church is encouraged to pray for all people, including leaders and those in authority. Forgiveness Forgiveness is a central theme in the Bible, reflecting God's grace and mercy towards humanity. It involves the release of an offense or debt, restoring relationships and bringing reconciliation. Forgiveness is both a divine act and a human responsibility, as believers are called to forgive others as they have been forgiven by God. The foundation of forgiveness is found in God's character. In Exodus 34:6-7, God reveals Himself to Moses as "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and truth, maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin." This self-revelation establishes God's willingness to forgive as an integral part of His nature. The New Testament further reveals God's forgiveness through the person and work of Jesus Christ. In Ephesians 1:7, Paul writes, "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace." The sacrificial death of Christ is the means by which God's forgiveness is extended to humanity, offering redemption and reconciliation. Believers are called to emulate God's forgiveness in their relationships with others. In Matthew 6:14-15, Jesus teaches, "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours." This teaching underscores the reciprocal nature of forgiveness, where receiving God's forgiveness is linked to forgiving others. The parable of the unforgiving servant in Matthew 18:21-35 further illustrates this principle. When Peter asks Jesus how many times he should forgive a brother who sins against him, Jesus responds with the parable, emphasizing the boundless nature of forgiveness and the expectation that those who have been forgiven must also forgive. Forgiveness is not merely a personal act but a reflection of the gospel's transformative power. Colossians 3:13 exhorts believers, "Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." This call to forgiveness is rooted in the believer's identity in Christ and the new life they have received through Him.
