Influence in High Places

In the biblical narrative, the concept of influence in high places is a recurring theme, illustrating how individuals in positions of authority or proximity to power can significantly impact the course of events, both for good and ill. This influence is often seen in the lives of key biblical figures who, through their faith, wisdom, or strategic actions, affect the destiny of nations and the fulfillment of God's purposes.

Joseph in Egypt

One of the most prominent examples of influence in high places is Joseph, the son of Jacob. Sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph eventually rises to become the second most powerful man in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. His influence is pivotal during a time of severe famine. Joseph's interpretation of Pharaoh's dreams and his subsequent management of Egypt's resources not only save Egypt but also preserve the lineage of Israel. As recorded in Genesis 41:39-41 , Pharaoh acknowledges Joseph's divine wisdom: "Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, 'Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. You shall be in charge of my house, and all my people are to obey your commands. Only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.'"

Esther in Persia

Esther, a Jewish queen in the Persian Empire, exemplifies influence in high places through her courage and strategic intervention. When a decree threatens the annihilation of the Jewish people, Esther risks her life by approaching King Xerxes without being summoned, a bold move that could have led to her death. Her influence with the king leads to the salvation of her people. Esther 4:14 highlights the providential nature of her position: "For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?"

Daniel in Babylon

Daniel, a captive in Babylon, rises to a position of influence through his unwavering faith and God-given ability to interpret dreams. Serving under multiple kings, Daniel's influence is evident in his role as a trusted advisor and his impact on royal decrees. His integrity and devotion to God lead to the acknowledgment of God's sovereignty by King Darius, as seen in Daniel 6:26-27 : "I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. For He is the living God and He endures forever; His kingdom will not be destroyed, His dominion will never end."

Nehemiah in Persia

Nehemiah, serving as cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia, uses his position to secure permission and resources to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. His influence is not only political but also spiritual, as he leads the people in a revival of faith and commitment to God's laws. Nehemiah 2:4-5 records his bold request: "The king said to me, 'What is it you want?' Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king, 'If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.'"

New Testament Examples

In the New Testament, influence in high places is seen in figures like the Apostle Paul, who, though often imprisoned, uses his Roman citizenship and legal knowledge to spread the Gospel and appeal to the highest authorities, including Caesar. Acts 26:28-29 captures a moment of influence as Paul speaks before King Agrippa: "Then Agrippa said to Paul, 'Can you persuade me in such a short time to become a Christian?' 'Short time or long,' Paul replied, 'I pray to God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains.'"

These examples demonstrate how God places His servants in strategic positions to accomplish His divine purposes, using their influence to bring about His will on earth.
