Humility

Humility is a fundamental virtue in the Christian faith, characterized by a modest view of one's own importance and a recognition of one's dependence on God. The Bible consistently emphasizes humility as a key attribute of a faithful believer. In the Old Testament, humility is often associated with wisdom and the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 22:4 states, "The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life."

The New Testament further develops the concept of humility, particularly through the teachings and example of Jesus Christ. In Philippians 2:3-8 , the Apostle Paul exhorts believers to emulate Christ's humility: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross."

Humility is also linked to the grace of God. James 4:6 declares, "But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'" This passage underscores the idea that humility is essential for receiving God's favor and grace.

Dependence

Dependence on God is a central theme throughout Scripture, reflecting the believer's trust and reliance on God's provision, guidance, and strength. The Bible portrays human beings as inherently dependent on their Creator, who sustains all life. In the Old Testament, the Israelites' journey through the wilderness serves as a powerful illustration of dependence on God. Deuteronomy 8:3 recounts, "He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD."

The Psalms frequently express a deep sense of reliance on God. Psalm 121:1-2 declares, "I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth." This passage highlights the believer's acknowledgment of God's sovereignty and the assurance that He is the ultimate source of help and protection.

In the New Testament, Jesus teaches about dependence on God through the Lord's Prayer, instructing His followers to pray for their daily needs. Matthew 6:11 states, "Give us this day our daily bread." This request signifies a daily reliance on God's provision.

The Apostle Paul also emphasizes dependence on God in his letters. In 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 , Paul shares his personal experience of relying on God's strength in weakness: "But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

Humility and dependence are intertwined virtues that reflect a believer's relationship with God. They are essential for spiritual growth and maturity, enabling Christians to live in accordance with God's will and to experience His grace and power in their lives.
