Gossip

Gossip, often understood as idle talk or rumor, especially about the personal or private affairs of others, is addressed in the Bible as a destructive force that can harm relationships and communities. The Scriptures consistently warn against engaging in gossip, highlighting its potential to sow discord and damage reputations.

In the Old Testament, the book of Proverbs provides several admonitions against gossip. Proverbs 16:28 states, "A perverse man spreads dissension, and a gossip separates close friends." This verse underscores the divisive nature of gossip, illustrating how it can fracture even the strongest of bonds. Similarly, Proverbs 11:13 notes, "A gossip reveals a secret, but a trustworthy person keeps a confidence," contrasting the behavior of a gossip with that of a faithful individual who respects privacy and confidentiality.

The New Testament also addresses the issue of gossip. In his epistle to the Romans, the Apostle Paul includes gossipers in a list of those who act contrary to God's will. Romans 1:29 describes them as being "filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips." This passage places gossip alongside other serious sins, emphasizing its severity in the eyes of God.

Furthermore, the Apostle Paul advises the early church to avoid gossip and idle talk. In 1 Timothy 5:13 , he warns, "At the same time, they also learn to be idle, going from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not." This instruction highlights the importance of being productive and focused on edifying speech rather than engaging in harmful chatter.

Strife

Strife, characterized by conflict, discord, and contention, is another behavior that the Bible cautions against. It is often linked with pride, selfishness, and a lack of love, all of which are contrary to the teachings of Christ.

Proverbs 17:14 offers wisdom on avoiding strife: "Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out." This proverb advises individuals to refrain from initiating conflict, recognizing that once strife begins, it can quickly escalate beyond control.

The New Testament further elaborates on the dangers of strife within the Christian community. In Galatians 5:19-21 , Paul lists "strife" among the works of the flesh, warning that "those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." This passage serves as a sobering reminder of the spiritual consequences of engaging in contentious behavior.

James, the brother of Jesus, also addresses the issue of strife in his epistle. James 3:16 states, "For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice." Here, James links strife with jealousy and selfish ambition, suggesting that these attitudes lead to chaos and moral decay.

The Bible encourages believers to pursue peace and unity, as seen in Ephesians 4:3 : "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace." This exhortation calls Christians to actively work towards harmony, avoiding behaviors that lead to division and strife.

In summary, both gossip and strife are viewed in the Bible as detrimental to personal relationships and the broader community. Believers are called to speak truthfully, maintain confidentiality, and seek peace, reflecting the character of Christ in their interactions with others.
