Introduction

The concept of glorifying God is central to Christian theology and practice. It encompasses the believer's duty to honor and magnify God through every aspect of life and even in death. This entry explores the biblical foundation for glorifying God, the means by which believers can do so, and the significance of this calling.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible consistently emphasizes the importance of glorifying God. In 1 Corinthians 10:31, the Apostle Paul instructs, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God" . This verse underscores the comprehensive nature of glorifying God, extending to all actions and decisions.

In the Old Testament, the Psalms frequently call for the glorification of God. Psalm 86:12 declares, "I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify Your name forever" . This reflects a heart posture of worship and adoration that is to be maintained throughout one's life.

Means of Glorifying God in Life

1. Obedience to God's Commands: Living in accordance with God's commandments is a primary way to glorify Him. Jesus said in John 14:15, "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments" . Obedience reflects a life surrendered to God's will and brings Him glory.

2. Worship and Praise: Regular worship, both corporate and personal, is a vital expression of glorifying God. Hebrews 13:15 encourages believers, "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that confess His name" .

3. Bearing Fruit: In John 15:8, Jesus states, "This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, proving yourselves to be My disciples" . The fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) and the fruit of good works (Ephesians 2:10) both serve to glorify God.

4. Proclaiming the Gospel: Sharing the message of salvation glorifies God by spreading His truth and love. Romans 1:16 affirms, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" .

5. Living a Holy Life: Holiness reflects God's character and brings Him glory. 1 Peter 1:15-16 exhorts believers, "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy'" .

Glorifying God in Death

The believer's death can also be a powerful testimony to God's glory. Philippians 1:20-21 expresses the Apostle Paul's perspective: "I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have complete boldness, so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain" . This passage highlights the believer's hope and assurance in Christ, which can glorify God even in the face of death.

The Example of Jesus

Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of glorifying God in both life and death. His earthly ministry was marked by perfect obedience and submission to the Father's will. In John 17:4, Jesus prays, "I have glorified You on earth by accomplishing the work You gave Me to do" . His sacrificial death on the cross was the pinnacle of glorifying God, as it fulfilled God's redemptive plan for humanity.

Conclusion

The call to glorify God in life and death is a profound and all-encompassing aspect of the Christian faith. It requires a heart devoted to God, a life lived in obedience to His Word, and a willingness to proclaim His truth. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, believers are equipped to fulfill this high calling, bringing honor and glory to God in all circumstances.
