According to Numbers 3:25-26 , "The duties of the Gershonites at the Tent of Meeting were to care for the tabernacle and tent, its coverings, the curtain at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar, and the ropes—all the service for these items." The Gershomites were responsible for the fabrics and coverings of the tabernacle, which included the tent itself and its various curtains and hangings. This role was crucial for the protection and sanctity of the tabernacle, ensuring that it was properly maintained and transported as the Israelites journeyed through the wilderness. Allocation of Cities As part of their inheritance, the Gershomites were allocated cities within the territories of other tribes, as they did not receive a separate land inheritance like the other tribes of Israel. Instead, they were given specific cities to dwell in, along with their surrounding pasturelands. Joshua 21:6 states, "The descendants of Gershon received thirteen cities from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan." Role in the Temple With the establishment of the temple in Jerusalem under King Solomon, the roles of the Levites, including the Gershomites, evolved. They continued to serve in various capacities related to the temple worship and maintenance. The chronicler notes their involvement in the musical aspect of temple worship, as seen in 1 Chronicles 6:31-32 : "These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the LORD after the ark rested there. They ministered with song before the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting, until Solomon built the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, and they performed their duties according to the regulations given to them."
