Firstfruits and Priorities

Topical Encyclopedia
Firstfruits in the Bible refers to the initial yield of a harvest, which was offered to God as an act of worship and acknowledgment of His provision. This concept is deeply rooted in the agricultural society of ancient Israel and carries significant theological implications.

The practice of offering firstfruits is first mentioned in Exodus 23:19 : "Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God." This commandment underscores the principle of giving God the first and best of what one has, symbolizing trust in His continued provision.

In Leviticus 23:10-11 , the Israelites are instructed: "Speak to the Israelites and say, ‘When you enter the land I am giving you and reap its harvest, you are to bring to the priest a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest. And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD so that it may be accepted on your behalf; the priest is to wave it on the day after the Sabbath." This offering was part of the Feast of Weeks, also known as Pentecost, and was a time of thanksgiving for the harvest.

The concept of firstfruits extends beyond agricultural produce. In the New Testament, it takes on a spiritual dimension. In 1 Corinthians 15:20 , Paul refers to Christ as the "firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep," indicating that Jesus' resurrection is the first of many to come, guaranteeing the future resurrection of believers.

Moreover, believers themselves are described as a kind of firstfruits. James 1:18 states, "He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of His creation." This signifies that Christians are set apart for God, the first of His new creation.

The principle of firstfruits teaches the importance of prioritizing God in all aspects of life, recognizing His sovereignty and expressing gratitude for His blessings.

Priorities

The Bible provides clear guidance on the priorities that should govern a believer's life, emphasizing the importance of placing God first. This principle is encapsulated in the greatest commandment found in Matthew 22:37-38 : "Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment."

The call to prioritize God is further reinforced in Matthew 6:33 , where Jesus instructs, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you." This verse highlights the promise that when God is placed at the center of one's life, He will provide for all other needs.

The Bible also addresses the importance of prioritizing relationships, particularly within the family. Ephesians 5:25 instructs husbands to "love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her," emphasizing the sacrificial love that should characterize marital relationships. Similarly, Ephesians 6:4 advises fathers, "Do not provoke your children to wrath; instead, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord," underscoring the priority of nurturing and guiding one's children in the faith.

In terms of work and service, Colossians 3:23 advises, "Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, for the Lord and not for men." This verse encourages believers to prioritize their work as an act of worship, serving God in all endeavors.

The Bible also warns against misplaced priorities, as seen in the parable of the rich fool in Luke 12:16-21 . The rich man prioritized his wealth and comfort, neglecting his relationship with God, which ultimately led to his downfall.

In summary, biblical priorities are centered on loving God, nurturing relationships, and serving others, all while maintaining a focus on eternal values over temporal concerns.
