Enemies of Peace

In the biblical context, the concept of "enemies of peace" refers to individuals, groups, or spiritual forces that oppose or disrupt the peace that God desires for His creation. Peace, or "shalom" in Hebrew, encompasses not only the absence of conflict but also the presence of harmony, wholeness, and well-being. The Bible provides numerous examples and teachings regarding those who act as adversaries to this divine peace.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, enemies of peace are often depicted as nations or individuals who oppose Israel, God's chosen people. These adversaries frequently sought to disrupt the peace and prosperity that God intended for Israel. For instance, the Philistines, Moabites, and Ammonites are recurrently portrayed as enemies who waged war against Israel, thereby disturbing the peace of the land (Judges 3:12-30; 1 Samuel 17).

Psalm 120:6-7 captures the lament of one who dwells among those who hate peace: "Too long have I dwelt among those who hate peace. I am for peace; but when I speak, they are for war." This passage highlights the tension between the desire for peace and the reality of living among those who oppose it.

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the focus shifts from physical enemies to spiritual and internal adversaries. Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, came to bring reconciliation between God and humanity. However, His message and mission were met with resistance. In Matthew 10:34, Jesus states, "Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword." This indicates that the peace Jesus offers often leads to division, as it challenges existing sinful structures and calls for a radical transformation of the heart.

The Apostle Paul identifies spiritual forces as enemies of peace. In Ephesians 6:12, he writes, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world's darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." These spiritual adversaries seek to disrupt the peace that believers have in Christ.

Characteristics of Enemies of Peace

Enemies of peace are characterized by their opposition to God's will and their promotion of discord and division. Proverbs 6:16-19 lists behaviors that are detestable to the Lord, including "a heart that devises wicked schemes" and "a person who stirs up conflict in the community." Such actions are antithetical to the peace that God desires.

James 3:16-18 contrasts earthly wisdom, which leads to disorder and every evil practice, with the wisdom from above, which is "first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere." Those who embody earthly wisdom act as enemies of peace, while those who pursue godly wisdom promote peace.

The Role of Believers

Believers are called to be peacemakers, actively working to counteract the influence of enemies of peace. In the Beatitudes, Jesus declares, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God" (Matthew 5:9). This calling involves not only seeking personal peace but also striving to bring reconciliation and harmony to the broader community.

Romans 12:18 exhorts believers, "If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone." This instruction acknowledges the challenges posed by enemies of peace but encourages believers to pursue peace as far as it depends on them.

Conclusion

The Bible presents a multifaceted view of enemies of peace, encompassing both external and internal adversaries. While the presence of such enemies is a reality, believers are encouraged to rely on God's strength and wisdom to overcome these challenges and to be agents of His peace in the world.
