Encountering God's glory refers to the profound experience of witnessing or perceiving the divine presence and majesty of God. In the Bible, God's glory is often associated with His holiness, power, and the manifestation of His presence. The Hebrew word for glory, "kavod," conveys a sense of weightiness or honor, while the Greek word "doxa" emphasizes brightness and splendor. God's glory is a central theme throughout Scripture, revealing His character and eliciting worship and reverence from His people.

Biblical Instances of Encountering God's Glory

1. Moses and the Burning Bush
In Exodus 3, Moses encounters God's glory through the burning bush. The angel of the Lord appears to him in flames of fire from within a bush, yet the bush does not burn up. God reveals Himself to Moses, saying, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob" (Exodus 3:6). This encounter marks the beginning of Moses' mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.

2. Mount Sinai
The Israelites experience God's glory at Mount Sinai. Exodus 24:16-17 describes, "The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day, He called to Moses from within the cloud. And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the mountaintop in the eyes of the Israelites." This event underscores God's holiness and the seriousness of His covenant with His people.

3. The Tabernacle and the Temple
God's glory fills the Tabernacle and later the Temple, signifying His dwelling among His people. In Exodus 40:34-35 , "Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Moses was unable to enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle." Similarly, at the dedication of Solomon's Temple, "the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud; for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD" (1 Kings 8:11).

The prophet Isaiah encounters God's glory in a vision, as recorded in Isaiah 6. He sees the Lord seated on a high and exalted throne, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Seraphim call out, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; His glory fills the whole earth" (Isaiah 6:3). 5. The Transfiguration of Jesus

Paul's encounter with God's glory occurs on the road to Damascus. A light from heaven suddenly surrounds him, and he hears the voice of Jesus. This transformative experience leads to Paul's conversion and his mission to spread the Gospel. Acts 9:3-5 recounts, "As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?' 'Who are You, Lord?' Saul asked. 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' He replied."

The glory of God is ultimately revealed in Jesus Christ, who is "the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His nature" (Hebrews 1:3). Believers are called to reflect God's glory in their lives, as they are transformed into His likeness "with ever-increasing glory" (2 Corinthians 3:18).
