Topical Encyclopedia EarthIn the Bible, the term "earth" is used to describe the physical world created by God, as well as the realm of human existence. The opening verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1, states, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." This establishes the earth as a fundamental part of God's creation, intricately designed and purposefully made. The earth is depicted as a place of beauty and abundance, intended to sustain life. Genesis 1:11-12 describes the creation of vegetation: "Then God said, 'Let the earth bring forth vegetation, seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each bearing fruit with seed according to its kind.' And it was so. The earth produced vegetation: seed-bearing plants according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good." The earth is also the stage for human history and the unfolding of God's redemptive plan. In Genesis 2:7, God forms man from the dust of the ground, highlighting the intimate connection between humanity and the earth: "Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being." Throughout Scripture, the earth is subject to the effects of sin and the curse resulting from the Fall. Romans 8:20-22 speaks of creation's subjection to futility and its longing for redemption: "For the creation was subjected to futility, not by its own will, but because of the One who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until the present time." Despite the fallen state of the earth, it remains under God's sovereign control. Psalm 24:1 declares, "The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein." This affirms God's ownership and authority over the earth and all its inhabitants. Heaven Heaven, in biblical terms, refers to the dwelling place of God, the realm of His glory, and the ultimate destination for believers. It is often depicted as a place of perfect holiness, peace, and eternal communion with God. In the Lord's Prayer, Jesus teaches His disciples to pray, "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name" (Matthew 6:9), acknowledging God's heavenly abode. Heaven is described as a place of indescribable beauty and majesty. Revelation 21:4-5 provides a glimpse of the new heaven and new earth: "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away. And the One seated on the throne said, 'Behold, I make all things new.'" The Bible also speaks of heaven as the ultimate reward for the faithful. In John 14:2-3, Jesus comforts His disciples with the promise of a heavenly home: "In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and welcome you into My presence, so that you also may be where I am." Heaven is characterized by the presence of God and the absence of sin. Revelation 21:27 states, "But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who practices an abomination or a lie, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life." This underscores the purity and holiness of heaven, reserved for those redeemed by Christ. The Bible also contrasts heaven with the earth, emphasizing the eternal nature of the former. In 2 Peter 3:10, it is written, "But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and its works will be laid bare." This highlights the transient nature of the current earth and the enduring reality of heaven. In summary, the Bible presents earth as the temporary, physical realm of human existence, marred by sin but under God's sovereign rule. Heaven, on the other hand, is the eternal, spiritual realm of God's presence, characterized by holiness, joy, and the fulfillment of God's promises to His people.
