Diligence

Diligence is a consistent and earnest effort to accomplish what is undertaken, characterized by careful and persistent work or effort. In the Bible, diligence is highly esteemed and is often associated with wisdom, prosperity, and spiritual growth. The Scriptures encourage believers to be diligent in their work, faith, and pursuit of righteousness.

Proverbs 12:24 states, "The hand of the diligent will rule, but laziness ends in forced labor." This verse highlights the principle that diligence leads to leadership and success, while laziness results in subjugation and hardship. Similarly, Proverbs 13:4 notes, "The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the soul of the diligent is fully satisfied." Here, diligence is contrasted with slothfulness, emphasizing that diligent individuals find fulfillment and satisfaction.

In the New Testament, diligence is also linked to spiritual growth and maturity. Hebrews 6:11-12 exhorts believers, "We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that your hope may be fully assured. Then you will not be sluggish, but will imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised." This passage encourages Christians to maintain diligence in their faith journey, ensuring that their hope remains steadfast and that they follow the example of faithful predecessors.

The Apostle Peter also emphasizes the importance of diligence in the Christian life. In 2 Peter 1:5-7 , he writes, "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith virtue; and to virtue, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love." The phrase "make every effort" underscores the necessity of diligence in cultivating these virtues, which are essential for spiritual progress.

Progress

Progress in the biblical context often refers to the advancement in spiritual maturity, understanding, and holiness. It is the process of growing in faith and becoming more Christ-like. The Bible encourages believers to strive for progress in their spiritual lives, continually seeking to deepen their relationship with God and to live according to His will.

Philippians 3:12-14 captures the Apostle Paul's perspective on progress: "Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been perfected, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize of God’s heavenly calling in Christ Jesus." Paul acknowledges that he has not yet reached perfection but is committed to pressing forward, illustrating the ongoing nature of spiritual progress.

In 1 Timothy 4:15 , Paul advises Timothy, "Be diligent in these matters and absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all." Here, progress is linked to diligence, suggesting that a committed and focused effort in spiritual disciplines will result in visible growth and development.

The concept of progress is also evident in the metaphor of the Christian life as a race. Hebrews 12:1-2 encourages believers, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith." This passage calls Christians to persevere in their spiritual journey, continually advancing toward the goal of Christ-likeness.
