Dependence on God, Not on Human Institutions

Introduction

The concept of dependence on God rather than on human institutions is a recurring theme throughout the Bible. This principle emphasizes the importance of placing trust and reliance on God's sovereignty, wisdom, and provision, rather than on the transient and often fallible systems created by humans. This entry explores key biblical passages and themes that highlight this principle.

Old Testament Foundations

The Old Testament lays a strong foundation for the theme of dependence on God. In the book of Psalms, David frequently expresses his reliance on God as his refuge and strength. Psalm 118:8-9 states, "It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes." This passage underscores the superiority of divine protection over human authority.

The account of the Israelites in the wilderness further illustrates this theme. In Exodus 16, God provides manna from heaven, teaching the Israelites to depend on Him daily for sustenance. This reliance is further emphasized in Deuteronomy 8:3 , where Moses reminds the people, "He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD."

Prophetic Warnings

The prophets often warned against placing trust in human alliances and military power. Isaiah 31:1 cautions, "Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the abundance of chariots and in the great strength of horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel or seek help from the LORD." This warning highlights the futility of relying on human strength instead of seeking God's guidance and protection.

Jeremiah also speaks to this theme, particularly in Jeremiah 17:5-7 : "Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind, who makes the flesh his strength and turns his heart from the LORD. He will be like a shrub in the desert; he will not see when prosperity comes. But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him."

New Testament Teachings

The New Testament continues to emphasize dependence on God. Jesus, in His Sermon on the Mount, teaches about trusting God for daily needs. In Matthew 6:31-33 , He instructs, "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans strive after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you."

The Apostle Paul also addresses this theme in his letters. In Philippians 4:6-7 , he writes, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This passage encourages believers to rely on God through prayer rather than succumbing to anxiety over worldly concerns.

The Role of Faith

Faith is central to the concept of dependence on God. Hebrews 11, often referred to as the "Faith Chapter," provides numerous examples of individuals who trusted in God rather than human institutions. Hebrews 11:6 states, "And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him."

Conclusion

The Bible consistently teaches that true security and provision come from God alone. While human institutions have their place, they are not to be the ultimate source of trust and reliance. Believers are called to live by faith, seeking God's kingdom and righteousness above all else, trusting in His unfailing love and provision.
