Early Life and Captivity

Daniel was among the young men of noble or royal lineage taken captive from Jerusalem to Babylon during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 1:3-4). Despite being in a foreign land, Daniel remained faithful to the God of Israel. His commitment to God's laws is evident when he resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, choosing instead a diet of vegetables and water (Daniel 1:8-16). When the mysterious writing appeared on the wall during Belshazzar's feast, Daniel was called upon to interpret it. Despite the king's offer of rewards, Daniel's primary concern was to deliver God's message. After interpreting the writing, which foretold the fall of Belshazzar's kingdom, Daniel was honored with a purple robe, a gold chain, and a proclamation as the third highest ruler in the kingdom (Daniel 5:29).

Service Under Darius and the Lion's Den

Daniel's prosperity continued under the rule of Darius the Mede. Recognized for his exceptional qualities, Daniel was appointed as one of the three administrators over the kingdom, and he distinguished himself so much that the king planned to set him over the entire realm (Daniel 6:1-3). However, this favor incited jealousy among other officials, leading to a plot against him. Despite the decree that no one could pray to any god or man except the king, Daniel remained faithful to God, praying three times a day as was his custom (Daniel 6:10).

As a result of his faithfulness, Daniel was thrown into the lion's den. God miraculously delivered him, shutting the mouths of the lions. This divine intervention led to Daniel's continued prosperity, as King Darius issued a decree honoring the God of Daniel and promoted him to even greater success (Daniel 6:25-28).
