Call to Be Prepared

Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of being prepared is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing the importance of readiness in both spiritual and practical aspects of life. This call to preparedness is rooted in the understanding that life is unpredictable and that believers must be vigilant and ready for the return of Christ, as well as for the challenges and opportunities that life presents.

Old Testament Foundations

The Old Testament lays the groundwork for the call to be prepared through various narratives and teachings. In the account of Noah, God commands Noah to prepare an ark in anticipation of the coming flood (Genesis 6:14-22). Noah's obedience and preparedness save his family and the animal kingdom, illustrating the importance of heeding God's warnings and instructions.

Proverbs also speaks to the wisdom of preparation: "Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways and be wise. Without a commander, without an overseer or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food at harvest" (Proverbs 6:6-8). This passage highlights the virtue of diligence and foresight, encouraging believers to learn from the industriousness of the ant.

New Testament Teachings

The New Testament further develops the theme of preparedness, particularly in the teachings of Jesus. In the parable of the ten virgins (Matthew 25:1-13), Jesus illustrates the necessity of being ready for His return. The wise virgins, who bring extra oil for their lamps, are prepared when the bridegroom arrives, while the foolish ones are left out because they failed to prepare adequately. Jesus concludes the parable with a clear admonition: "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour" (Matthew 25:13).

The Apostle Paul also emphasizes the need for spiritual readiness. In his letter to the Ephesians, he instructs believers to "put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes" (Ephesians 6:11). This metaphorical armor includes truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God, all of which equip Christians to face spiritual battles.

Eschatological Preparedness

The call to be prepared is especially pertinent in eschatological contexts, where believers are urged to be ready for the end times and the second coming of Christ. In 1 Thessalonians 5:2-6, Paul writes, "For you are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, 'Peace and security,' destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you, brothers, are not in the darkness so that this day should overtake you like a thief. For you are all sons of the light and sons of the day; we do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not sleep as the others do, but let us remain awake and sober" .

Practical Applications

The biblical call to be prepared extends beyond spiritual readiness to practical aspects of life. Believers are encouraged to be good stewards of their resources, to plan wisely, and to be ready to serve others in times of need. The principle of preparedness is not about living in fear but about living with intentionality and purpose, trusting in God's sovereignty while taking responsible actions.

In summary, the call to be prepared is a multifaceted biblical principle that encompasses spiritual vigilance, practical wisdom, and eschatological readiness. It is a call to live with awareness and anticipation, grounded in faith and obedience to God's word.
