Authority

In the biblical context, authority is a central theme that underscores the sovereignty and governance of God over creation, as well as the delegated authority given to human institutions and individuals. The concept of authority is rooted in the very nature of God, who is depicted as the ultimate authority in heaven and on earth.

1. Divine Authority: The Bible begins with the assertion of God's authority in creation. Genesis 1:1 states, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." This foundational verse establishes God as the supreme authority over all that exists. Throughout Scripture, God's authority is affirmed in His ability to command nature, govern nations, and direct the course of history. Psalm 103:19 declares, "The LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all."

2. Jesus Christ's Authority: In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is presented as possessing divine authority. In Matthew 28:18, Jesus proclaims, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me." This authority is demonstrated through His teachings, miracles, and ultimately, His resurrection. Jesus' authority is also evident in His ability to forgive sins (Mark 2:10) and His role as the final judge (John 5:22).

3. Scriptural Authority: The Bible itself is regarded as the authoritative Word of God. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work." The authority of Scripture is foundational for doctrine, reproof, and guidance in the Christian life.

4. Delegated Authority: God delegates authority to human institutions, such as governments and the church. Romans 13:1-2 instructs, "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are appointed by God." Similarly, church leaders are given authority to shepherd the flock (Hebrews 13:17).

Truth

Truth in the Bible is closely associated with the character of God and the revelation of His will. It is both a moral and spiritual concept that reflects the reality of God's nature and His purposes for humanity.

1. God as the Source of Truth: God is depicted as the ultimate source of truth. Numbers 23:19 affirms, "God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind." The truthfulness of God is foundational to His promises and covenants.

2. Jesus as the Embodiment of Truth: Jesus Christ is described as the embodiment of truth. In John 14:6, Jesus declares, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." This statement underscores the exclusive and absolute nature of truth as found in Christ.

3. The Holy Spirit and Truth: The Holy Spirit is referred to as the "Spirit of truth" in John 16:13, where it is said, "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth." The Spirit's role is to illuminate the truth of God's Word and guide believers in understanding and applying it.

4. Scriptural Truth: The Bible is considered the written revelation of God's truth. Psalm 119:160 states, "The entirety of Your word is truth, and all Your righteous judgments endure forever." Scripture serves as the standard by which truth is measured and discerned.

5. Living in Truth: Believers are called to live in accordance with the truth. Ephesians 4:15 encourages, "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head." Living in truth involves integrity, honesty, and alignment with God's revealed will.
