But like mortals you will die,

God addresses unjust judges and rulers who had been entrusted with authority to defend the weak, the fatherless, the poor, and the oppressed. Though they stood in places of honor and were accountable to administer God’s justice, they remained mortal men under His judgment. No office, wealth, or public esteem can shield a person from death or from answering to the Lord. Their end recalls God’s sentence upon Adam: “For dust you are, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19).

and like rulers you will fall.”

Earthly leaders may appear secure, yet God brings down those who exalt themselves and use power to preserve injustice. Pharaoh’s resistance ended in the Red Sea, Nebuchadnezzar was humbled until he acknowledged God’s rule, and Herod was struck down after receiving divine honors (Exodus 14; Daniel 4; Acts 12:21–23). Human authority is temporary and delegated; God alone is the righteous Judge over every nation and ruler.
