Nehemiah 12:23
As for the descendants of Levi, the family heads up to the days of Johanan son of Eliashib were recorded in the Book of the Chronicles.
As for the descendants of Levi,

The Levites were set apart from the other tribes for the service of the Lord at the tabernacle and later at the temple. Although they received cities among Israel rather than a tribal territory, the Lord Himself was their inheritance. Their ministry included guarding holy things, assisting the priests, leading worship, and teaching God’s Law to the people.

the family heads

The heads of Levitical families bore responsibility for preserving faithful service across generations. Their genealogies established who was qualified for particular duties in the temple and helped maintain the order God had given through Moses. In the restored community, such leadership protected worship from neglect and guarded the covenant identity of the people.

up to the days of Johanan son of Eliashib

Eliashib served as high priest during Nehemiah’s early administration and was involved in the rebuilding period, though he later compromised the temple’s holiness by aiding Tobiah. Johanan belonged to the succeeding priestly generation, showing that these records continued through the postexilic restoration. The careful preservation of priestly and Levitical lines affirmed that temple service was conducted by those appointed according to God’s order.

were recorded in the Book of the Chronicles.

The record was likely an official historical register containing genealogies and accounts of public and religious affairs, rather than the biblical books of Chronicles. Such documentation provided accountability for those serving in the temple and preserved the continuity of Israel’s worship after exile. God’s faithfulness was displayed not only in rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls but also in restoring the ordered ministry through which His people drew near to Him.

The Joy of the Lord, the Strength of his People
LAST Sabbath day in the morning I spoke of the birth of our Saviour as being full of joy to the people of God, and, indeed, to all nations. We then looked at the joy from a distance; we will now in contemplation draw nearer to it, and perhaps as we consider it, and remark the multiplied reasons for its existence, some of those reasons may operate upon our own hearts, and we may go out of this house of prayer ourselves partakers of the exceeding great joy. We shall count it to have been a successful

The Girdle of the City. Nehemiah 3
The beginning of the circumference was from 'the sheep-gate.' That, we suppose, was seated on the south part, yet but little removed from that corner, which looks south-east. Within was the pool of Bethesda, famous for healings. Going forward, on the south part, was the tower Meah: and beyond that, "the tower of Hananeel": in the Chaldee paraphrast it is, 'The tower Piccus,' Zechariah 14:10; Piccus, Jeremiah 31:38.--I should suspect that to be, the Hippic tower, were not that placed on the north

Ezra-Nehemiah
Some of the most complicated problems in Hebrew history as well as in the literary criticism of the Old Testament gather about the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. Apart from these books, all that we know of the origin and early history of Judaism is inferential. They are our only historical sources for that period; and if in them we have, as we seem to have, authentic memoirs, fragmentary though they be, written by the two men who, more than any other, gave permanent shape and direction to Judaism, then
