Deuteronomy 32:18 similarly rebukes Israel for forsaking the God who gave them birth. Deu 32:6 Is this how you repay the LORD, O foolish and senseless… and built palaces; Prosperity and impressive building projects became substitutes for humble dependence on the Lord. Structures intended to display royal power and national security testified instead to misplaced confidence. Wealth, political strength, and human achievement could not preserve a people who had abandoned their Maker. Jer 22:13-14 Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness,… Judah has multiplied its fortified cities. Judah strengthened its defenses in the face of regional threats, as kings such as Rehoboam had done. Fortified cities were not evil in themselves, but they revealed Judah’s deeper problem when military preparation replaced trust in God. The nation sought safety behind walls while neglecting the covenant that alone secured its future. 2Ch 11:5-12 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he built up cities… But I will send fire upon their cities, God’s judgment would reach the very places in which His people placed their confidence. Fire portrays the devastating overthrow that would come through invading armies under God’s sovereign hand. What Israel and Judah built apart from faithfulness to Him would not endure. Amo 2:5 So I will send fire upon Judah to consume the citadels… and it will consume their citadels. Strongholds, palaces, and defenses would prove powerless before divine judgment. The destruction of these centers of power exposed the futility of trusting in human security while rejecting the Lord. God alone is the true refuge of His people, and covenant unfaithfulness brings the loss of every false refuge.
