Paul refuses to adopt the standards of the self-appointed teachers troubling Corinth. Their authority rested on public displays of superiority and mutual approval rather than on Christ’s call and God’s work. Human applause cannot establish spiritual authority; the Lord alone commends His servants. Jesus likewise taught that self-exaltation ends in humiliation, while humble service is honored by God.

The rival teachers made their own circle the standard of success. Such comparison produces pride, rivalry, and distorted judgments because it avoids the searching standard of Christ. Believers are not called to imitate the ambition of the surrounding culture, but to grow in obedience, holiness, truth, and love according to God’s revealed will.
