1And then, as mankind increased on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, 2The sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair (attractive); and they took any that they wanted as wives. 3And the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not always strive with mankind, for they are mortal flesh: in the future, their normal lifespan shall be a hundred twenty years.” 4There were giants (Nephilim) on the earth in those days; and back then, when the sons of God came in unto (had sex with) the daughters of men, they bore children to them, and these became mighty and famous warriors - men of renown. The term “sons of God” in Scripture often simply refers to believers, people who place their trust in God; but there are a few passages where that term refers to entities other than the people who obey and follow God. These include Genesis 6:1-4, Job 1:6, and Job 2:1. Bible scholars and commentators differ as to exactly what entities the term “sons of God” in Genesis 6 refers. Their opinions range from “nobles and persons of power”, to the posterity of Seth, to fallen angels, and beyond. Each such view has its supporters and detractors. The purpose here is not to offer any added insight; but to simply point out that the term “sons of God”, as used here, does not seem to refer to the people who believe, trust, and follow God, as it does in most other places in Scripture. 5And God saw that the wickedness of man on the earth was great, and that every inclination of his heart was continually evil. 6And the LORD regretted that He had made mankind on the earth, and it grieved Him in His heart. 7And the LORD said, “I will eradicate man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth - and with them the animals, the birds of the air; and the creatures that creep along the ground; for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8But Noah found grace (favor) in the eyes of the LORD. 9This is the account of Noah and his family: Noah was a righteous man and blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. 10Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11The inhabitants of the earth had become corrupt and the earth was filled with violence. 12And God saw how depraved the earth had become - that the people on the earth had corrupted their ways. 13And God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy everyone living on earth; for they have filled the earth with violence. I will destroy them along with the earth!” 14“Build an ark of gopher (cypress) wood; you shall make rooms in the ark, and coat it with pitch both inside and out. 15And this is how you shall build it: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits (450 feet), the breadth of it fifty cubits (75 feet), and its height shall be thirty cubits (45 feet). 16Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening, one cubit (18 inches) high all around. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle, and upper decks. 17And I shall bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy everything under heaven that has the breath of life in it; and everything on earth shall die. 18But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall enter the ark - you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you. 19And you shall bring into the ark two of every species, male and female, of every living creature, to be kept alive with you. 20Of every kind of bird, and every kind of animal, of every kind of creeping thing of the earth - two of every kind shall come to you, to keep them alive. 21And take with you all of the food that they will eat; you shall gather food for you, and for them.” 22And Noah did; according to all that God commanded him.
