Then was Jesus led up by the Spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil:

there having fasted forty days and forty nights, he at length grew hungry.

whereupon the tempter came to him, and said, "If thou be the Son of God, command these stones to become bread."

but Jesus answered him, It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every thing that God shall prescribe."

then the devil took Jesus with him to Jerusalem, and having set him on the wing of the temple, he said to him,

if you are the Son of God, throw your self down: for it is written, "he will charge his angels to take care of you, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest you bruise your foot against a stone."

Jesus replied, it is likewise written, "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."

Again, the devil accompanyed him up a very high mountain, and representing to him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them: all these things,

said he, will I give you, if you will prostrate your self and worship me.
