The whole earth was of one language and of one speech.

It happened, as they traveled from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they settled there.

And they said to one another, |Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.| They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.

They said, |Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let us make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.|

And God came down to see the city and the tower, that humankind was building.

And God said, |Look, they are one people, and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do. So now nothing which they plan to do will be too difficult for them.

Come, let us go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.|

Then God scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth; so they ceased building the city.

Therefore its name was called Babel, because there God confused the language of all the earth. From there he scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
