2 Samuel 8:1-12 ▼

1 Some time later, David (beloved) defeated the Philistines (immigrants), subdued them, and took Metheg-ammah (bridle of the mother city) from the hand of the Philistines.

2 David also defeated the Moabites (of his father), made them lie down on the ground, and measured them off with a cord. He measured off with two lengths those to be put to death, and with one length those to be spared. So the Moabites became subject to David (beloved) and brought him tribute.

3 David (beloved) also defeated Hadadezer (Hadad is help) son of Rehob (broad place), king of Zobah (station), who had marched out to restore his dominion along the Euphrates River [along the River].

4 David (beloved) captured from him a thousand chariots, seven thousand charioteers [captured from him seventeen hundred charioteers], and twenty thousand foot soldiers, and he hamstrung all the horses except a hundred he kept for the chariots.

5 When the Arameans (exalted) of Damascus (well-watered land) came to help King Hadadezer (Hadad is help) of Zobah (station), David (beloved) struck down twenty-two thousand of their men.

6 Then he (beloved) placed garrisons in Aram (exalted) of Damascus (well-watered land), and the Arameans became subject to David and brought him tribute. So the LORD {YHWH} made David victorious wherever he went.

7 And David (beloved) took the gold shields that belonged to the officers of Hadadezer (Hadad is help) and brought them to Jerusalem (city of peace).

8 And from Betah [Tebah] and Berothai (cypress grove), cities of Hadadezer (Hadad is help), King David (beloved) took a large amount of bronze.

9 When King Toi (Tou) of Hamath (fortress) heard that David (beloved) had defeated the entire army of Hadadezer (Hadad is help),

10 he (wander) sent his son Joram (Hadoram) to greet King David (beloved) and bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer (Hadad is help), who had been at war with Toi. Joram brought with him articles of silver and gold and bronze,

11 and King David (beloved) dedicated these to the LORD {YHWH}, along with the silver and gold he had dedicated from all the nations he had subdued—

12 from Edom [Aram] and Moab (of his father), from the Ammonites (tribal) and Philistines (immigrants) and Amalekites (dwellers in a valley), and from the spoil of Hadadezer (Hadad is help) son of Rehob (broad place), king of Zobah (station).
