1 Now there was a man named Elkanah (God has possessed) who was from Ramathaim-zophim (double height of the watchers) in the hill country of Ephraim (doubly fruitful). He was the son of Jeroham (showing pity), the son of Elihu (Eliel), the son of Tohu (lowly), the son of Zuph (honeycomb), an Ephraimite (fruitfulness). 2 He had two wives, one named Hannah (grace) and the other Peninnah (jewel). And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none. 3 Year after year Elkanah would go up from his city to worship and sacrifice to the LORD {YHWH} of Hosts at Shiloh (place of rest), where Eli’s (ascension) two sons, Hophni (pugilist) and Phinehas (mouth of brass), were priests to the LORD. 4 And whenever the day came for Elkanah (God has possessed) to present his sacrifice, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah (jewel) and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah (grace) he would give a double portion (a choice portion), for he loved her even though the LORD {YHWH} had closed her womb. 1 Samuel 1:1-5, Berean Annotated Bible.
