1 TO THE OVERSEER. A PSALM OF DAVID. Hear, O God, my voice, in my meditation, || You keep my life from the fear of an enemy, Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy. For the director of music. A psalm of David. Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint; protect my life from the threat of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret counsel of evildoers, || From the tumult of workers of iniquity. Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the throng of evildoers, Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from the plots of evildoers.
3 Who sharpened their tongue as a sword, || They directed their arrow—a bitter word. who whet their tongues like swords, who aim bitter words like arrows, They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.
4 To shoot the perfect in secret places, || Suddenly they shoot him, and do not fear. shooting from ambush at the blameless, shooting at him suddenly and without fear. They shoot from ambush at the innocent; they shoot suddenly, without fear.
5 They strengthen an evil thing for themselves, || They recount of the hiding of snares, || They have said, “Who looks at it?” They hold fast to their evil purpose; they talk of laying snares secretly, thinking, “Who can see them?” They encourage each other in evil plans, they talk about hiding their snares; they say, “Who will see it?”
6 They search out perverse things, “We perfected a searching search,” || And the inward part of man, and the heart, [are] deep. They search out injustice, saying, “We have accomplished a diligent search.” For the inward mind and heart of a man are deep. They plot injustice and say, “We have devised a perfect plan!” Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.
7 And God shoots them [with] an arrow, || Their wounds have been sudden, But God shoots his arrow at them; they are wounded suddenly. But God will shoot them with his arrows; they will suddenly be struck down.
8 And they cause him to stumble, || Their own tongue [is] against them, || Every looker on them flees away. They are brought to ruin, with their own tongues turned against them; all who see them will wag their heads. He will turn their own tongues against them and bring them to ruin; all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.
9 And all men fear, and declare the work of God, || And they have wisely considered His deed. Then all mankind fears; they tell what God has brought about and ponder what he has done. All people will fear; they will proclaim the works of God and ponder what he has done.
10 The righteous rejoice in YHWH, || And have trusted in Him, || And all the upright of heart boast! Let the righteous one rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him! Let all the upright in heart exult! The righteous will rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him; all the upright in heart will glory in him!
