1 By David. To you, O LORD, I cry out! My protector, do not ignore me! If you do not respond to me, I will join those who are descending into the grave. To you, O LORD, I call; my rock, be not deaf to me, lest, if you be silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit. Of David. To you, LORD, I call; you are my Rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you remain silent, I will be like those who go down to the pit.
2 Hear my plea for mercy when I cry out to you for help, when I lift my hands toward your holy temple! Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy, when I cry to you for help, when I lift up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary. Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place.
3 Do not drag me away with evil men, with those who behave wickedly, who talk so friendly to their neighbors, while they plan to harm them! Do not drag me off with the wicked, with the workers of evil, who speak peace with their neighbors while evil is in their hearts. Do not drag me away with the wicked, with those who do evil, who speak cordially with their neighbors but harbor malice in their hearts.
4 Pay them back for their evil deeds! Pay them back for what they do! Punish them! Give to them according to their work and according to the evil of their deeds; give to them according to the work of their hands; render them their due reward. Repay them for their deeds and for their evil work; repay them for what their hands have done and bring back on them what they deserve.
5 For they do not understand the LORD's actions, or the way he carries out justice. The LORD will permanently demolish them. Because they do not regard the works of the LORD or the work of his hands, he will tear them down and build them up no more. Because they have no regard for the deeds of the LORD and what his hands have done, he will tear them down and never build them up again.
6 The LORD deserves praise, for he has heard my plea for mercy! Blessed be the LORD! For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy. Praise be to the LORD, for he has heard my cry for mercy.
7 The LORD strengthens and protects me; I trust in him with all my heart. I am rescued and my heart is full of joy; I will sing to him in gratitude. The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him. The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him.
8 The LORD strengthens his people; he protects and delivers his chosen king. The LORD is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed. The LORD is the strength of his people, a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
9 Deliver your people! Empower the nation that belongs to you! Care for them like a shepherd and carry them in your arms at all times! Oh, save your people and bless your heritage! Be their shepherd and carry them forever. Save your people and bless your inheritance; be their shepherd and carry them forever.
