1 TO THE OVERSEER. ON THE EIGHTH. A PSALM OF DAVID. Save, YHWH, for the saintly has failed, || For the steadfast have ceased || From the sons of men: Save, O LORD, for the godly one is gone; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of man. For the director of music. According to sheminith. A psalm of David. Help, LORD, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.
2 They each speak vanity with his neighbor, || Lip of flattery! With heart and heart they speak. Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak. Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts.
3 YHWH cuts off all lips of flattery, || A tongue speaking great things, May the LORD cut off all flattering lips, the tongue that makes great boasts, May the LORD silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue—
4 Who said, “By our tongue we do mightily: Our lips [are] our own; who [is] lord over us?” those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail, our lips are with us; who is master over us?” those who say, “By our tongues we will prevail; our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?”
5 Because of the spoiling of the poor, || Because of the groaning of the needy, || Now I arise, says YHWH, || I set in safety [him who] breathes for it. “Because the poor are plundered, because the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the LORD; “I will place him in the safety for which he longs.” “Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise,” says the LORD. “I will protect them from those who malign them.”
6 Sayings of YHWH [are] pure sayings—Silver tried in a furnace of earth, refined sevenfold. The words of the LORD are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times. And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times.
7 You, O YHWH, preserve them, || You keep us from this generation for all time. You, O LORD, will keep them; you will guard us from this generation forever. You, LORD, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked,
8 The wicked walk around continually, || According as vileness is exalted by sons of men! On every side the wicked prowl, as vileness is exalted among the children of man. who freely strut about when what is vile is honored by the human race.
