When you walk, let them keep step with you. When you sleep, let them guard you. And when you keep watch, speak with them. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.
For commandment is a lamp, and law is a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life. For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life, For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life,
So may they guard you from an evil woman, and from the flattering tongue of the outsider. to preserve you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. keeping you from your neighbor’s wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.
Let not your heart desire her beauty; do not be captivated by her winks. Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes; Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.
For the price of a prostitute is only one loaf. Yet the woman seizes the precious soul of a man. for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, but a married woman hunts down a precious life. For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread, but another man’s wife preys on your very life.
Would a man be able to conceal fire in his bosom, so that his garments would not burn? Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?
Or could he walk over burning coals, so that his feet would not be burned? Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched? Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?
So also, he who enters to the wife of his neighbor shall not be clean when he touches her. So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; none who touches her will go unpunished. So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.
Not so great is the fault when someone has stolen. For he steals so as to satisfy a hungry soul. People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry, People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
Also, if he is apprehended, he shall repay sevenfold and hand over all the substance of his house. but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold; he will give all the goods of his house. Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
But whoever is an adulterer, because of the emptiness of his heart, will destroy his own soul. He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself. But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself.
He gathers shame and dishonor to himself, and his disgrace will not be wiped away. He will get wounds and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be wiped away. Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away.
For the jealousy and fury of the husband will not spare him on the day of vindication, For jealousy makes a man furious, and he will not spare when he takes revenge. For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
nor will he agree to the pleadings of anyone, nor will he accept, as repayment, a multitude of gifts. He will accept no compensation; he will refuse though you multiply gifts. He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.
