That shall leade thee when thou goest, preserue thee when thou art asleepe, and when thou awakest talke with thee. When you walk, they will lead you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; and when you awake, they will talk with you. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.
For the commaundement is a lanterne, and the lawe a light: yea chastening and nurture is the way of life: For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life, For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life,
That they may kepe thee from the euyll woman, and from the flattering tongue of the straunge woman. to preserve you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. keeping you from your neighbor’s wife, from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.
Lust not after her beautie in thyne heart, lest thou be taken with her fayre lokes. Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes; Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.
By an harlot a man is brought to beg his bread, and a woman wyll hunte for the pretious life of man. for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, but a married woman hunts down a precious life. For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread, but another man’s wife preys on your very life.
May a man take fire in his bosome, and his clothes not be brent? Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?
Or can one go vpon hotte coales, and his feete not be brent? Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched? Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?
Euen so, whosoeuer goeth in to his neyghbours wife and toucheth her, can not be vngiltie. So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; none who touches her will go unpunished. So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife; no one who touches her will go unpunished.
Men do not vtterly despise a thiefe that stealeth to satisfie his soule, when he is hungrie: People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his appetite when he is hungry, People do not despise a thief if he steals to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
But if he may be gotten, he restoreth agayne seuen tymes as muche, or els he maketh recompence with all the good of his house. but if he is caught, he will pay sevenfold; he will give all the goods of his house. Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold, though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
But whoso committeth adultrie with a woman, lacketh vnderstanding: and he that doth it, destroyeth his owne soule. He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself. But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself.
He getteth him selfe a plague and dishonour, and his reproche shall neuer be put out: He will get wounds and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be wiped away. Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away.
For the ielousie and wrath of the man wyll not be entreated, For jealousy makes a man furious, and he will not spare when he takes revenge. For jealousy arouses a husband’s fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
No though thou wouldest offer hym great gyftes to make amendes, he wyll not receaue them. He will accept no compensation; he will refuse though you multiply gifts. He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.
