15 As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over a poor people. Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a poor people. Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a helpless people.
16 The prince that lacketh understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days. A ruler who lacks understanding is a cruel oppressor, but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days. A tyrannical ruler practices extortion, but one who hates ill-gotten gain will enjoy a long reign.
17 A man that is laden with the blood of any person shall flee unto the pit; let no man stay him. If one is burdened with the blood of another, he will be a fugitive until death; let no one help him. Anyone tormented by the guilt of murder will seek refuge in the grave; let no one hold them back.
18 Whoso walketh uprightly shall be delivered: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once. Whoever walks in integrity will be delivered, but he who is crooked in his ways will suddenly fall. The one whose walk is blameless is kept safe, but the one whose ways are perverse will fall into the pit.
19 He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough. Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty. Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty.
20 A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be unpunished. A faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished. A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.
21 To have respect of persons is not good: neither that a man should transgress for a piece of bread. To show partiality is not good, but for a piece of bread a man will do wrong. To show partiality is not good— yet a person will do wrong for a piece of bread.
22 He that hath an evil eye hasteth after riches, and knoweth not that want shall come upon him. A stingy man hastens after wealth and does not know that poverty will come upon him. The stingy are eager to get rich and are unaware that poverty awaits them.
23 He that rebuketh a man shall afterward find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue. Whoever rebukes a man will afterward find more favor than he who flatters with his tongue. Whoever rebukes a person will in the end gain favor rather than one who has a flattering tongue.
24 Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer. Whoever robs his father or his mother and says, “That is no transgression,” is a companion to a man who destroys. Whoever robs their father or mother and says, “It’s not wrong,” is partner to one who destroys.
25 He that is of a greedy spirit stirreth up strife: but he that putteth his trust in the LORD shall be made fat. A greedy man stirs up strife, but the one who trusts in the LORD will be enriched. The greedy stir up conflict, but those who trust in the LORD will prosper.
26 He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered. Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered. Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.
27 He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse. Whoever gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse. Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.
28 When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase. When the wicked rise, people hide themselves, but when they perish, the righteous increase. When the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding; but when the wicked perish, the righteous thrive.
