When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider well who is before thee; When you sit down to eat with a ruler, observe carefully what is before you, When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you,
and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. and put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite. and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.
Be not desirous of his dainties; for they are deceitful food. Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food. Do not crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive.
Weary not thyself to become rich; cease from thine own intelligence: Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness.
wilt thou set thine eyes upon it, it is gone; for indeed it maketh itself wings and it flieth away as an eagle towards the heavens. When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.
Eat thou not the food of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties. Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies, Do not eat the food of a begrudging host, do not crave his delicacies;
For as he thinketh in his soul, so is he. Eat and drink! will he say unto thee; but his heart is not with thee. for he is like one who is inwardly calculating. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you. for he is the kind of person who is always thinking about the cost. “Eat and drink,” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.
Thy morsel which thou hast eaten must thou vomit up, and thou wilt have wasted thy sweet words. You will vomit up the morsels that you have eaten, and waste your pleasant words. You will vomit up the little you have eaten and will have wasted your compliments.
Speak not in the ears of a foolish [man], for he will despise the wisdom of thy words. Do not speak in the hearing of a fool, for he will despise the good sense of your words. Do not speak to fools, for they will scorn your prudent words.
Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: Do not move an ancient landmark or enter the fields of the fatherless, Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
for their redeemer is mighty; he will plead their cause against thee. for their Redeemer is strong; he will plead their cause against you. for their Defender is strong; he will take up their case against you.
Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge. Apply your heart to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge. Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.
Withhold not correction from the child; for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die: Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish them with the rod, they will not die.
thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from Sheol. If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol. Punish them with the rod and save them from death.
My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine; My son, if your heart is wise, my heart too will be glad. My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad indeed;
and my reins shall exult, when thy lips speak right things. My inmost being will exult when your lips speak what is right. my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
