My son, if you accept my sayings, || And lay up my commands with you, My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
To cause your ear to attend to wisdom, || You incline your heart to understanding, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—
For if you call for intelligence, || [And] give forth your voice for intelligence, yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
If you seek her as silver, || And search for her as hid treasures, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
Then you understand the fear of YHWH, || And you find the knowledge of God. then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
For YHWH gives wisdom, || Knowledge and understanding from His mouth. For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Even to lay up substance for the upright, || A shield for those walking uprightly. he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
To keep the paths of judgment, || And He preserves the way of His saints. guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.
Then you understand righteousness, || And judgment, and uprightness—every good path. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path.
For wisdom comes into your heart, || And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
Thoughtfulness watches over you, || Understanding keeps you, discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.
To deliver you from an evil way, || From any speaking contrary things, delivering you from the way of evil, from men of perverted speech, Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse,
Who are forsaking paths of uprightness, || To walk in ways of darkness, who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, who have left the straight paths to walk in dark ways,
Who are rejoicing to do evil, || They delight in [the] contrariness of the wicked, who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil, who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil,
Whose paths [are] crooked, || Indeed, they are perverted in their ways. men whose paths are crooked, and who are devious in their ways. whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.
