1 A wise son accepts his father's discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. A wise son hears his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.
2 From the fruit of his speech a person eats good things, but the faithless desire the fruit of violence. From the fruit of his mouth a man eats what is good, but the desire of the treacherous is for violence. From the fruit of their lips people enjoy good things, but the unfaithful have an appetite for violence.
3 The one who guards his words guards his life, but whoever is talkative will come to ruin. Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.
4 The appetite of the sluggard craves but gets nothing, but the desire of the diligent will be abundantly satisfied. The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied. A sluggard’s appetite is never filled, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.
5 The righteous person hates anything false, but the wicked person acts in shameful disgrace. The righteous hates falsehood, but the wicked brings shame and disgrace. The righteous hate what is false, but the wicked make themselves a stench and bring shame on themselves.
6 Righteousness guards the one who lives with integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner. Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless, but sin overthrows the wicked. Righteousness guards the person of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.
7 There is one who pretends to be rich and yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor and yet possesses great wealth. 13 The one who despises instruction will pay the penalty, but whoever esteems instruction will be rewarded. 22 A benevolent person leaves an inheritance for his grandchildren, but the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous. 24 The one who spares his rod hates his child, but the one who loves his child is diligent in disciplining him. Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. 25 The righteous has enough food to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked lacks food. The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked suffers want. The righteous eat to their hearts’ content, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.
