And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, The LORD said to Moses,
Send for thee men, and let them spy the land of the Chananites, which I give to the sons of Israel for a possession; one man for a tribe, thou shalt send them away according to their families, every one of them a prince. “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.)
And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Chanaan, and said to them, Go up by this wilderness; and ye shall go up to the mountain, Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into the Negeb and go up into the hill country, When Moses sent them to explore Canaan, he said, “Go up through the Negev and on into the hill country.
and ye shall see the land, what it is, and the people that dwells on it, whether it is strong or weak, or whether they are few or many. and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many.
And what the land is on which they dwell, whether it is good or bad; and what the cities are wherein these dwell, whether they dwell in walled cities or unwalled. and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cities that they dwell in are camps or strongholds, What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified?
And what the land is, whether rich or poor; whether there are trees in it or no: and ye shall persevere and take of the fruits of the land: and the days were the days of spring, the forerunners of the grape. and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes. How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees in it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land.” (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.)
And they went up and surveyed the land from the wilderness of Sin to Rhoob, as men go in to Aemath. So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath. So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin as far as Rehob, toward Lebo Hamath.
And they went up by the wilderness, and departed as far as Chebron; and there was Achiman, and Sessi, and Thelami, the progeny of Enach. Now Chebron was built seven years before Tanin of Egypt. They went up into the Negeb and came to Hebron. Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
And they came to the valley of the cluster and surveyed it; and they cut down thence a bough and one cluster of grapes upon it, and bore it on staves, and they took of the pomegranates and the figs. And they came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they also brought some pomegranates and figs. When they reached the Valley of Eshkol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs.
And they called that place, The valley of the cluster, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence. That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster that the people of Israel cut down from there. That place was called the Valley of Eshkol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there.
And they returned from thence, having surveyed the land, after forty days. At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land. At the end of forty days they returned from exploring the land.
And they proceeded and came to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Pharan Cades; and they brought word to them and to all the congregation, and they shewed the fruit of the land: And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land.
and they reported to him, and said, We came into the land into which thou sentest us, a land flowing with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit.
Only the nation that dwells upon it is bold, and they have very great and strong walled towns, and we saw there the children of Enach. However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there.
And Amalec dwells in the land toward the south: and the Chettite and the Evite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwells in the hill country: and the Chananite dwells by the sea, and by the river Jordan. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.” The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan.”
And Chaleb stayed the people from speaking before Moses, and said to him, Nay, but we will go up by all means, and will inherit it, for we shall surely prevail against them. But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”
But the men that went up together with him said, We will not go up, for we shall not by any means be able to go up against the nation, for it is much stronger than we. Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” But the men who had gone up with him said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.”
And they brought a horror of that land which they surveyed upon the children of Israel, saying, The land which we passed by to survey it, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of extraordinary stature. So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.
And there we saw the giants; and we were before them as locusts, yea even so were we before them. And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.” We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them.”
