1	Now when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he was furious and filled with indignation. He ridiculed the Jews	Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged, and he jeered at the Jews.	But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews.	Now it came about that when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious and very angry, and he mocked the Jews.	When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews,
2	before his associates and the army of Samaria, saying, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Can they restore the wall by themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Can they bring these burnt stones back to life from the mounds of rubble?”	And he said in the presence of his brothers and of the army of Samaria, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they restore it for themselves? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish up in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, and burned ones at that?”	And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned?	And he spoke in the presence of his brothers and the wealthy people of Samaria and said, “What are these feeble Jews doing? Are they going to restore <i>the temple</i> for themselves? Can they offer sacrifices? Can they finish <i>it</i> in a day? Can they revive the stones from the heaps of rubble, even the burned ones?”	and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, “What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are?”
3	Then Tobiah the Ammonite, who was beside him, said, “If even a fox were to climb up on what they are building, it would break down their wall of stones!”	Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, “Yes, what they are building—if a fox goes up on it he will break down their stone wall!”	Now Tobiah the Ammonite <i>was</i> by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall.	Now Tobiah the Ammonite <i>was</i> near him, and he said, “Even what they are building—if a fox were to jump <i>on it,</i> it would break their stone wall down!”	Tobiah the Ammonite, who was at his side, said, “What they are building—even a fox climbing up on it would break down their wall of stones!”
4	Hear us, O God, for we are despised. Turn their scorn back upon their own heads, and let them be taken as plunder to a land of captivity.	Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn back their taunt on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives.	Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:	Hear, O our God, how we are <i>an object of</i> contempt! Return their taunting on their own heads, and turn them into plunder in a land of captivity.	Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity.
5	Do not cover up their iniquity or let their sin be blotted out from Your sight, for they have provoked the builders.	Do not cover their guilt, and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger in the presence of the builders.	And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked <i>thee</i> to anger before the builders.	Do not forgive their guilt and do not let their sin be wiped out before You, for they have demoralized the builders.	Do not cover up their guilt or blot out their sins from your sight, for they have thrown insults in the face of the builders.
6	So we rebuilt the wall until all of it was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.	So we built the wall. And all the wall was joined together to half its height, for the people had a mind to work.	So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.	So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together to half its <i>height,</i> for the people had a mind to work.	So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.
7	When Sanballat and Tobiah, together with the Arabs, Ammonites, and Ashdodites, heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they were furious,	But when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabs and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the repairing of the walls of Jerusalem was going forward and that the breaches were beginning to be closed, they were very angry.	But it came to pass, <i>that</i> when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, <i>and</i> that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,	Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the repair of the walls of Jerusalem went on, <i>and</i> that the breaches began to be closed, they were very angry.	But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the people of Ashdod heard that the repairs to Jerusalem’s walls had gone ahead and that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry.
8	and all of them conspired to come and fight against Jerusalem and create a hindrance.	And they all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it.	And conspired all of them together to come <i>and</i> to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.	So all of them conspired together to come to fight against Jerusalem and to cause confusion in it. 9	So we prayed to our God and posted a guard against them day and night.	And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.	Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.	But we prayed to our God, and because of them we set up a guard against them day and night. 10	Meanwhile, the people of Judah said: “The strength of the laborer fails, and there is so much rubble that we will never be able to rebuild the wall.”	In Judah it was said, “The strength of those who bear the burdens is failing. There is too much rubble. By ourselves we will not be able to rebuild the wall.”	And Judah said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed, and <i>there is</i> much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.	And so in Judah it was said: “The strength of the burden bearers is failing, Yet there is much rubble; And we ourselves are unable To rebuild the wall.”	Meanwhile, the people in Judah said, “The strength of the laborers is giving out, and there is so much rubble that we cannot rebuild the wall.”
11	And our enemies said, “Before they know or see a thing, we will come into their midst, kill them, and put an end to the work.”	And our enemies said, “They will not know or see till we come among them and kill them and stop the work.”	And our adversaries said, They shall not know, neither see, till we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.	And our enemies said, “They will not know or see until we come among them, kill them, and put a stop to the work.”	Also our enemies said, “Before they know it or see us, we will be right there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work.”
12	At that time the Jews who lived nearby came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”	At that time the Jews who lived near them came from all directions and said to us ten times, “You must return to us.”	And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us <i>they will be upon you</i>.	When the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times, “They will come up against us from every place where you may turn,”	Then the Jews who lived near them came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
13	So I stationed men behind the lowest sections of the wall, at the vulnerable areas. I stationed them by families with their swords, spears, and bows.	So in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, in open places, I stationed the people by their clans, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.	Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, <i>and</i> on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.	then I stationed <i>men</i> in the lowest parts of the space behind the wall, the exposed places, and I stationed the people in families with their swords, spears, and bows.	Therefore I stationed some of the people behind the lowest points of the wall at the exposed places, posting them by families, with their swords, spears and bows.
14	After I had made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”	And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.”	And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, <i>which is</i> great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.	When I saw <i>their fear,</i> I stood and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people: “Do not be afraid of them; remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses.”	After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
15	When our enemies heard that we were aware of their scheme and that God had frustrated it, each of us returned to his own work on the wall.	When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work.	And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.	Now when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and that God had frustrated their plan, then all of us returned to the wall, each one to his work.	When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it, we all returned to the wall, each to our own work.
16	And from that day on, half of my servants did the work while the other half held spears, shields, bows, and armor. The officers stationed themselves behind all the people of Judah	From that day on, half of my servants worked on construction, and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. And the leaders stood behind the whole house of Judah,	And it came to pass from that time forth, <i>that</i> the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers <i>were</i> behind all the house of Judah.	And from that day <i>on,</i> half of my servants carried on the work while half of them kept hold of the spears, the shields, the bows, and the coats of mail; and the captains <i>were</i> behind all the house of Judah.	From that day on, half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor. The officers posted themselves behind all the people of Judah
17	who were rebuilding the wall. The laborers who carried materials worked with one hand and held a weapon with the other.	who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other.	They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, <i>every one</i> with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other <i>hand</i> held a weapon.	Those who were rebuilding the wall and those who carried burdens carried with one hand doing the work, and the other keeping hold of a weapon.	who were building the wall. 18	And each of the builders worked with his sword strapped at his side. But the trumpeter stayed beside me.	And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me.	For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and <i>so</i> builded. And he that sounded the trumpet <i>was</i> by me.	As for the builders, each <i>wore</i> his sword strapped to his waist as he built, while the trumpeter <i>stood</i> near me.	and each of the builders wore his sword at his side as he worked. But the man who sounded the trumpet stayed with me.
19	Then I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people: “The work is great and extensive, and we are spread out far from one another along the wall.	And I said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and widely spread, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another.	And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work <i>is</i> great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.	And I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, “The work is great and extensive, and we are separated on the wall far from one another.	Then I said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, “The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall.
20	Wherever you hear the sound of the horn, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us!”	In the place where you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.”	In what place <i>therefore</i> ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us.	At whatever place you hear the sound of the trumpet, assemble to us there. Our God will fight for us.”	Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!”
21	So we continued the work, while half of the men held spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out.	So we labored at the work, and half of them held the spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out.	So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.	So we carried on the work with half of them holding spears from dawn until the stars appeared.	So we continued the work with half the men holding spears, from the first light of dawn till the stars came out.
22	At that time I also said to the people, “Let every man and his servant spend the night inside Jerusalem, so that they can stand guard by night and work by day.”	I also said to the people at that time, “Let every man and his servant pass the night within Jerusalem, that they may be a guard for us by night and may labor by day.”	Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.	At that time I also said to the people, “Each man with his servant shall spend the night within Jerusalem, so that they may be a guard for us by night and a laborer by day.”	At that time I also said to the people, “Have every man and his helper stay inside Jerusalem at night, so they can serve us as guards by night and as workers by day.”
23	So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the guards with me changed out of our clothes; each carried his weapon, even to go for water.	So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes; each kept his weapon at his right hand.	So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, <i>saving that</i> every one put them off for washing.	So neither I, my brothers, my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me—none of us removed our clothes; each <i>took</i> his weapon <i>even to</i> the water.	Neither I nor my brothers nor my men nor the guards with me took off our clothes; each had his weapon, even when he went for water.
