8	And I was greatly displeased and threw all of Tobiah’s (YHWH is good) household goods out of the room.	And I was very angry, and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber.	I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah’s household goods out of the room.
9	Then I ordered that the rooms be purified, and I had the articles of the house of God {Elohim} restored to them, along with the grain offerings and frankincense.	Then I gave orders, and they cleansed the chambers, and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense. 10	I also learned that because the portions for the Levites had not been given to them, all the Levites and singers responsible for performing the service had gone back to their own fields. 13	I appointed as treasurers over the storerooms Shelemiah (repaid by YHWH) the priest, Zadok (righteous) the scribe, and Pedaiah (YHWH has ransomed) of the Levites, with Hanan (he is merciful) son of Zaccur (mindful), the son of Mattaniah (gift of YHWH), to assist them, because they were considered trustworthy. They were responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.	And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for they were considered reliable, and their duty was to distribute to their brothers.	I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zakkur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because they were considered trustworthy. They were made responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.
14	Remember me for this, O my God {Elohay}, and do not blot out my deeds of loving devotion for the house of my God and for its services.	Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service.	Remember me for this, my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house of my God and its services.
15	In those days I saw people in Judah (praised) treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, along with wine, grapes, and figs. All kinds of goods (burden) were being brought into Jerusalem (city of peace) on the Sabbath day. So I warned them against selling food on that day.	In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day when they sold food.	In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine, grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into Jerusalem on the Sabbath. Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day.
16	Additionally, men of Tyre who lived there were importing fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah (praised) in Jerusalem (city of peace).	Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself!	People from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath to the people of Judah.
17	Then I rebuked the nobles of Judah (praised) and asked, “What is this evil you⁺ are doing—profaning the Sabbath day?	Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?	I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this wicked thing you are doing—desecrating the Sabbath day?
18	Did not your⁺ forefathers do the same things, so that our God {Elohenu} brought all this disaster on us and on this city? And now you⁺ are rekindling His wrath against Israel (he wrestles with God) by profaning the Sabbath!”	Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”	Didn’t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought all this calamity on us and on this city? Now you are stirring up more wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath.”
19	When the evening shadows began to fall on the gates of Jerusalem (city of peace), just before the Sabbath, I ordered that the gates be shut and not opened until after the Sabbath. I posted some of my servants at the gates so that no load (burden) could enter on the Sabbath day.	As soon as it began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day.	When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day.
20	Once or twice, the merchants and those who sell all kinds of goods camped outside Jerusalem (city of peace),	Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice.	Once or twice the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem.
21	but I warned them, “Why are you⁺ camping in front of the wall? If you⁺ do it again, I will lay hands on you⁺.” From that time on, they did not return on the Sabbath.	But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath.	But I warned them and said, “Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest you.” From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath.
22	Then I instructed the Levites to purify themselves and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember me for this as well, O my God {Elohay}, and show me mercy according to Your abundant loving devotion.	Then I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.	Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember me for this also, my God, and show mercy to me according to your great love.
23	In those days I also saw Jews who had married women from Ashdod (I will spoil), Ammon, and Moab (from father: what father?). 24	Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod (I will spoil) or of the other peoples, but could not speak the language of Judah. Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples, and did not know how to speak the language of Judah.
25	I rebuked them and called down curses on them. I beat some of these men and pulled out their hair. Then I made them take an oath before God and said, “You⁺ must not give your⁺ daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your⁺ sons or for yourselves!	And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.	I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath in God’s name and said: “You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves.
26	Did not King Solomon (peace) of Israel (he wrestles with God) sin in matters like this? There was not a king like him among many nations, and he was loved by his God {Elohaw}, who made him king over all Israel—yet foreign women drew him into sin.	Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? Among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin.	Was it not because of marriages like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him. He was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was led into sin by foreign women.
27	Must we now hear that you⁺ too are doing all this terrible evil and acting unfaithfully against our God {Elohim} by marrying foreign women?”	Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”	Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women?”
28	Even one of the sons of Jehoiada (YHWH knows) son of Eliashib (God restores) the high priest had become a son-in-law to Sanballat (strength) the Horonite (native of Horonaim). Therefore I drove him away from me.	And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I chased him from me.	One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite. And I drove him away from me.
29	Remember them, O my God {Elohay}, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.	Remember them, O my God, because they have desecrated the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.	Remember them, my God, because they defiled the priestly office and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.
30	Thus I purified the priests and Levites from everything foreign, and I assigned specific duties to each of the priests and Levites.	Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and I established the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work;	So I purified the priests and the Levites of everything foreign, and assigned them duties, each to his own task.
31	I also arranged for contributions of wood at the appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God {Elohay}, with favor.	and I provided for the wood offering at appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.	I also made provision for contributions of wood at designated times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me with favor, my God.
