10 Then the apostles returned and reported to Jesus all that they had done. Taking them away privately, He withdrew to a town called Bethsaida. 12 As the day neared its end, the Twelve came to Jesus and said, “Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside for lodging and provisions. For we are in a desolate place here. Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place. Now the day was ending, and the twelve came up and said to Him, “Dismiss the crowd, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get something to eat; because here, we are in a secluded place.” Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”
13 But Jesus told them, “You give them something to eat. “ We have only five loaves of bread and two fish, they answered, “unless we go and buy food for all these people. But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. But He said to them, “You give them <i>something</i> to eat!” But they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.” He replied, “You give them something to eat.” They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.”
14 ( There were about five thousand men.) He told His disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each. For there were about five thousand men. 18 One day as Jesus was praying in private and the disciples were with Him, He questioned them: “Who do the crowds say I am? Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the people say that I am?” Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”
19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that a prophet of old has arisen. And they answered, “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” They answering said, John the Baptist; but some <i>say</i>, Elias; and others <i>say</i>, that one of the old prophets is risen again. They answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others <i>say</i> Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”
20 “But what about you? Jesus asked. “Who do you say I am? Peter answered, “The Christ of God. Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.” He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”
21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. 23 Then Jesus said to all of them, “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 25 What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet lose or forfeit his very self? For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? For what good does it do a person if he gains the whole world, but loses or forfeits himself? What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?
26 If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and <i>in his</i> Father's, and of the holy angels. For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory and <i>the glory</i> of the Father and the holy angels. 27 But I tell you truthfully, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God. 28 About eight days after Jesus had said these things, He took with Him Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray. 33 As Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. ( He did not know what he was saying.) And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. And as these <i>two men</i> were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; and let’s make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not realizing what he was saying. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)
34 While Peter was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. But while he was saying this, a cloud formed and <i>began</i> to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I have chosen. Listen to Him! 42 Even while the boy was approaching, the demon slammed him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 45 But they did not understand this statement. It was veiled from them so that they could not comprehend it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it. But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying. But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.” And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. and He said to them, “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.” Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”
49 “Master, said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in Your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not accompany us. John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we <i>tried to</i> prevent him, because he does not follow along with us.” “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50 “Do not stop him, Jesus replied, “for whoever is not against you is for you. But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.” And Jesus said unto him, Forbid <i>him</i> not: for he that is not against us is for us. But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder <i>him;</i> for the one who is not against you is for you.” “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”
51 As the day of His ascension approached, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, When the days were approaching for His ascension, He was determined to go to Jerusalem; As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.
52 He sent messengers on ahead, who went into a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him. And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53 But the people there refused to welcome Him, because He was heading for Jerusalem. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem. but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.
54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” And when his disciples James and John saw <i>this</i>, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? When His disciples James and John saw <i>this,</i> they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?”
55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. But he turned and rebuked them. But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. But He turned and rebuked them. But Jesus turned and rebuked them.
56 And He and His disciples went on to another village. And they went on to another village. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save <i>them</i>. And they went to another village. And they went on to another village. Then he and his disciples went to another village.
57 As they were walking along the road, someone said to Jesus, “I will follow You wherever You go. As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain <i>man</i> said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. As they were going on the road, someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”
58 Jesus replied, “ Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head. And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air <i>have</i> nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay <i>his</i> head. And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky <i>have</i> nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
59 Then He said to another man, “Follow Me. The man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father. To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. And He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
60 But Jesus told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead. You, however, go and proclaim the kingdom of God. And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
61 Still another said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first let me bid farewell to my family. Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say goodbye to those at my home.” Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”
62 Then Jesus declared, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God. But Jesus said to him, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
