1 “But now, O Job, hear my speech, and listen to all my words. “But now, hear my speech, O Job, and listen to all my words. 2 Behold, I will open my mouth; my address is on the tip of my tongue. Behold, I open my mouth; the tongue in my mouth speaks. Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth. “Behold now, I open my mouth, My tongue in my mouth speaks. I am about to open my mouth; my words are on the tip of my tongue.
3 My words are from an upright heart, and my lips speak sincerely what I know. My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely. My words <i>shall be of</i> the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly. “My words are <i>from</i> the integrity of my heart, And my lips speak knowledge sincerely. My words come from an upright heart; my lips sincerely speak what I know.
4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life. “The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life. 5 Refute me if you can; prepare your case and confront me. Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand. If thou canst answer me, set <i>thy words</i> in order before me, stand up. “Refute me if you can; Line up against me, take your stand. Answer me then, if you can; stand up and argue your case before me.
6 I am just like you before God; I was also formed from clay. Behold, I am toward God as you are; I too was pinched off from a piece of clay. Behold, I <i>am</i> according to thy wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay. “Behold, I belong to God, like you; I too have been formed out of the clay. I am the same as you in God’s sight; I too am a piece of clay.
7 Surely no fear of me should terrify you; nor will my hand be heavy upon you. Behold, no fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy upon you. Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee. “Behold, no fear of me should terrify you, Nor should my pressure weigh heavily on you. No fear of me should alarm you, nor should my hand be heavy on you.
8 Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard these very words: “Surely you have spoken in my ears, and I have heard the sound of your words. Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of <i>thy</i> words, <i>saying</i>, “You have in fact spoken while I listened, And I heard the sound of <i>your</i> words: “But you have said in my hearing— I heard the very words—
9 ‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, with no iniquity in me. You say, ‘I am pure, without transgression; I am clean, and there is no iniquity in me. I am clean without transgression, I <i>am</i> innocent; neither <i>is there</i> iniquity in me. ‘I am pure, without wrongdoing; I am innocent and there is no guilt in me. I am pure, I have done no wrong; I am clean and free from sin.
10 Yet God finds occasions against me; He counts me as His enemy. Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy, Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy, ‘Behold, He invents criticisms against me; He counts me as His enemy. Yet God has found fault with me; he considers me his enemy.
11 He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches over all my paths.’ he puts my feet in the stocks and watches all my paths.’ He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths. ‘He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches all my paths.’ He fastens my feet in shackles; he keeps close watch on all my paths.’
12 Behold, you are not right in this matter. I will answer you, for God is greater than man. “Behold, in this you are not right. I will answer you, for God is greater than man. Behold, <i>in</i> this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man. “Behold, let me respond to you, you are not right in this, For God is greater than mankind. “But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than any mortal.
13 Why do you complain to Him that He answers nothing a man asks? Why do you contend against him, saying, ‘He will answer none of man’s words’? Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters. “Why do you complain to Him That He does not give an account of all His doings? Why do you complain to him that he responds to no one’s words?
14 For God speaks in one way and in another, yet no one notices. For God speaks in one way, and in two, though man does not perceive it. For God speaketh once, yea twice, <i>yet man</i> perceiveth it not. “Indeed God speaks once, Or twice, <i>yet</i> no one notices it. For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it.
15 In a dream, in a vision in the night, when deep sleep falls upon men as they slumber on their beds, In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, while they slumber on their beds, In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; “In a dream, a vision of the night, When deep sleep falls on people, While they slumber in their beds, In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds,
16 He opens their ears and terrifies them with warnings then he opens the ears of men and terrifies them with warnings, Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, Then He opens the ears of people, And horrifies them with warnings, he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings,
17 to turn a man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride, that he may turn man aside from his deed and conceal pride from a man; That he may withdraw man <i>from his</i> purpose, and hide pride from man. So that He may turn a person away <i>from bad</i> conduct, And keep a man from pride; to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride,
18 to preserve his soul from the Pit and his life from perishing by the sword. he keeps back his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword. He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. He keeps his soul back from the pit, And his life from perishing by the spear. to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword.
19 A man is also chastened on his bed with pain and constant distress in his bones, “Man is also rebuked with pain on his bed and with continual strife in his bones, He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong <i>pain</i>: “<i>A person</i> is also rebuked by pain in his bed, And with constant complaint in his bones, “Or someone may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in their bones,
20 so that he detests his bread, and his soul loathes his favorite food. so that his life loathes bread, and his appetite the choicest food. So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. So that his life loathes bread, And his soul, food that he should crave. so that their body finds food repulsive and their soul loathes the choicest meal.
21 His flesh wastes away from sight, and his hidden bones protrude. His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen, and his bones that were not seen stick out. His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones <i>that</i> were not seen stick out. “His flesh wastes away from sight, And his bones, <i>which</i> were not seen, stick out. Their flesh wastes away to nothing, and their bones, once hidden, now stick out.
22 He draws near to the Pit, and his life to the messengers of death. His soul draws near the pit, and his life to those who bring death. Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers. “Then his soul comes near to the pit, And his life to those who bring death. They draw near to the pit, and their life to the messengers of death.
23 Yet if there is a messenger on his side, one mediator in a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him, If there be for him an angel, a mediator, one of the thousand, to declare to man what is right for him, If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness: “If there is an interceding angel for him, One out of a thousand, To remind a person of what is right for him, Yet if there is an angel at their side, a messenger, one out of a thousand, sent to tell them how to be upright,
24 to be gracious to him and say, ‘Spare him from going down to the Pit; I have found his ransom,’ and he is merciful to him, and says, ‘Deliver him from going down into the pit; I have found a ransom; Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. And he is gracious to him, and says, ‘Free him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom’; and he is gracious to that person and says to God, ‘Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them—
25 then his flesh is refreshed like a child’s; he returns to the days of his youth. let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor’; His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth: Let his flesh become fresher than in youth, Let him return to the days of his youthful vigor; let their flesh be renewed like a child’s; let them be restored as in the days of their youth’—
26 He prays to God and finds favor; he sees God’s face and shouts for joy, and God restores His righteousness to that man. then man prays to God, and he accepts him; he sees his face with a shout of joy, and he restores to man his righteousness. He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness. <i>Then</i> he will pray to God, and He will accept him, So that he may see His face with joy, And He will restore His righteousness to <i>that</i> person. then that person can pray to God and find favor with him, they will see God’s face and shout for joy; he will restore them to full well-being.
27 Then he sings before men with these words: ‘I have sinned and perverted what was right; yet I did not get what I deserved. He sings before men and says: ‘I sinned and perverted what was right, and it was not repaid to me. He looketh upon men, and <i>if any</i> say, I have sinned, and perverted <i>that which was</i> right, and it profited me not; “He will sing to people and say, ‘I have sinned and perverted what is right, And it is not proper for me. And they will go to others and say, ‘I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved.
28 He redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit, and I will live to see the light.’ He has redeemed my soul from going down into the pit, and my life shall look upon the light.’ He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. ‘He has redeemed my soul from going to the pit, And my life will see the light.’ God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’
29 Behold, all these things God does to a man, two or even three times, “Behold, God does all these things, twice, three times, with a man, Lo, all these <i>things</i> worketh God oftentimes with man, “Behold, God does all these <i>things</i> for a man two or three times, “God does all these things to a person— twice, even three times—
30 to bring back his soul from the Pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of life. to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be lighted with the light of life. To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living. To bring back his soul from the pit, So that he may be enlightened with the light of life. to turn them back from the pit, that the light of life may shine on them.
31 Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. Pay attention, O Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak. “Pay attention, Job, listen to me; Keep silent, and let me speak. “Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak.
32 But if you have something to say, answer me; speak up, for I would like to vindicate you. If you have any words, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you. If thou hast any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee. “<i>Then</i> if you have anything to say, answer me; Speak, for I would take pleasure in justifying you. If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, for I want to vindicate you.
33 But if not, then listen to me; be quiet, and I will teach you wisdom.” If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.” If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom. “If not, listen to me; Keep silent, and I will teach you wisdom.” But if not, then listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom.”
