And there came to me some men from the elders of Israel, and they sat before me. Then certain of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me. Some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat down in front of me.
And the word of YHWH came to me, saying: And the word of the LORD came to me: Then the word of the LORD came to me:
“Son of man, these men have set up their idols upon their hearts, and a stumbling block for their iniquity they have put before their faces. Can I be sought out in any way by them? “Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their hearts, and set the stumbling block of their iniquity before their faces. Should I indeed let myself be consulted by them? “Son of man, these men have set up idols in their hearts and put wicked stumbling blocks before their faces. Should I let them inquire of me at all?
Therefore you must speak to them and say to them, thus says the Lord YHWH: ‘Every man man of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart and puts a stumbling block for his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet, I, YHWH, will give answer to him in this, according to the abundance of his idolatry, Therefore speak to them and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Any one of the house of Israel who takes his idols into his heart and sets the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and yet comes to the prophet, I the LORD will answer him as he comes with the multitude of his idols, Therefore speak to them and tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: When any of the Israelites set up idols in their hearts and put a wicked stumbling block before their faces and then go to a prophet, I the LORD will answer them myself in keeping with their great idolatry.
so as to capture the house of Israel by their heart, in that they are estranged from Me by all their idols.’ that I may lay hold of the hearts of the house of Israel, who are all estranged from me through their idols. I will do this to recapture the hearts of the people of Israel, who have all deserted me for their idols.’
Therefore say to the house of Israel, thus says the Lord YHWH: ‘Turn back and turn away from your⁺ idols, and from all your⁺ abominations turn back your⁺ faces! “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: Repent and turn away from your idols, and turn away your faces from all your abominations. “Therefore say to the people of Israel, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Repent! Turn from your idols and renounce all your detestable practices!
For every man of the house of Israel, or from the foreigners who dwell in Israel, who separates himself from Me and sets up his idols in his heart, and puts a stumbling block for his iniquity before his face, and who comes to a prophet to inquire of him concerning Me, I, YHWH, will answer him Myself. For any one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn in Israel, who separates himself from me, taking his idols into his heart and putting the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and yet comes to a prophet to consult me through him, I the LORD will answer him myself. “’When any of the Israelites or any foreigner residing in Israel separate themselves from me and set up idols in their hearts and put a wicked stumbling block before their faces and then go to a prophet to inquire of me, I the LORD will answer them myself.
And I will set My face against that man, and I will set him as a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of My people. And you⁺ will know that I am YHWH. And I will set my face against that man; I will make him a sign and a byword and cut him off from the midst of my people, and you shall know that I am the LORD. I will set my face against them and make them an example and a byword. I will remove them from my people. Then you will know that I am the LORD.
And a prophet, if he is led astray and has spoken a word, I, YHWH, have enticed that prophet, and I will stretch out My hand against him, and I will destroy him from the midst of My people Israel. And if the prophet is deceived and speaks a word, I, the LORD, have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel. “’And if the prophet is enticed to utter a prophecy, I the LORD have enticed that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and destroy him from among my people Israel.
And they will bear their guilt. As the guilt of the one inquiring, will be the guilt of the prophet, And they shall bear their punishment—the punishment of the prophet and the punishment of the inquirer shall be alike— They will bear their guilt—the prophet will be as guilty as the one who consults him.
so that the house of Israel they will lead astray no longer from Me, and they will not profane themselves anymore with all their transgressions. And they will be unto Me as a people, and I will be unto them God! An utterance of the Lord YHWH.’” that the house of Israel may no more go astray from me, nor defile themselves anymore with all their transgressions, but that they may be my people and I may be their God, declares the Lord GOD.” Then the people of Israel will no longer stray from me, nor will they defile themselves anymore with all their sins. They will be my people, and I will be their God, declares the Sovereign LORD.’”
And the word of YHWH came to me, saying: And the word of the LORD came to me: The word of the LORD came to me:
“Son of man, when a land sins against Me to act unfaithfully—an unfaithfulness—and I stretch out My hand against it and cut off for it the staff of bread, and I send on it famine and I cut off from it man and beast, “Son of man, when a land sins against me by acting faithlessly, and I stretch out my hand against it and break its supply of bread and send famine upon it, and cut off from it man and beast, “Son of man, if a country sins against me by being unfaithful and I stretch out my hand against it to cut off its food supply and send famine upon it and kill its people and their animals,
even if these three men were in its midst—Noah, Daniel, and Job—only they by their righteousness would deliver their own soul! An utterance of the Lord YHWH. even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver but their own lives by their righteousness, declares the Lord GOD. even if these three men—Noah, Daniel and Job—were in it, they could save only themselves by their righteousness, declares the Sovereign LORD.
Or if I cause a wild beast to pass through the land and make it barren and it becomes a desolation, with no one passing through before the face of the beast, “If I cause wild beasts to pass through the land, and they ravage it, and it be made desolate, so that no one may pass through because of the beasts, “Or if I send wild beasts through that country and they leave it childless and it becomes desolate so that no one can pass through it because of the beasts,
even if these three men were in its midst—as I live, a declaration of the Lord YHWH—neither the sons or daughters they could deliver! They alone would be delivered, and the land would become a desolation. even if these three men were in it, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, they would deliver neither sons nor daughters. They alone would be delivered, but the land would be desolate. as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, even if these three men were in it, they could not save their own sons or daughters. They alone would be saved, but the land would be desolate.
Or if I should bring the sword against that land and say, ‘Sword, pass through the land!’ And I cut off from it man and beast, “Or if I bring a sword upon that land and say, Let a sword pass through the land, and I cut off from it man and beast, “Or if I bring a sword against that country and say, ‘Let the sword pass throughout the land,’ and I kill its people and their animals,
even if these three men were in the midst of it—as I live, a declaration of the Lord YHWH—they could not deliver the sons and daughters, but they themselves alone would be delivered. though these three men were in it, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, they would deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they alone would be delivered. as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, even if these three men were in it, they could not save their own sons or daughters. They alone would be saved.
Or if I should send a pestilence into that land and pour out My fury on it in blood, and cut off from it man and beast, “Or if I send a pestilence into that land and pour out my wrath upon it with blood, to cut off from it man and beast, “Or if I send a plague into that land and pour out my wrath on it through bloodshed, killing its people and their animals,
even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in the midst of it—as I live, a declaration of the Lord YHWH—neither the son nor daughter they could deliver! They by their righteousness would deliver only their own soul. even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, declares the Lord GOD, they would deliver neither son nor daughter. They would deliver but their own lives by their righteousness. as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, even if Noah, Daniel and Job were in it, they could save neither son nor daughter. They would save only themselves by their righteousness.
For thus says the Lord YHWH: ‘How much more when these four of My severe judgments—the sword, and famine, and the wild beast, and the pestilence—I send against Jerusalem, to cut off from it man and beast? “For thus says the Lord GOD: How much more when I send upon Jerusalem my four disastrous acts of judgment, sword, famine, wild beasts, and pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast! “For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: How much worse will it be when I send against Jerusalem my four dreadful judgments—sword and famine and wild beasts and plague—to kill its men and their animals!
And behold—there will be left in it a remnant, those being brought out, sons and daughters; behold, they will be coming out to you⁺, and you⁺ will see their ways and their deeds, and you⁺ will be comforted concerning the disaster that I have brought upon Jerusalem—all that I have brought upon it. But behold, some survivors will be left in it, sons and daughters who will be brought out; behold, when they come out to you, and you see their ways and their deeds, you will be consoled for the disaster that I have brought upon Jerusalem, for all that I have brought upon it. Yet there will be some survivors—sons and daughters who will be brought out of it. They will come to you, and when you see their conduct and their actions, you will be consoled regarding the disaster I have brought on Jerusalem—every disaster I have brought on it.
And they will comfort you⁺ when you⁺ see their ways and their deeds, and you⁺ will know that I have not without cause done all that I have done in it!’ An utterance of the Lord YHWH.” They will console you, when you see their ways and their deeds, and you shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, declares the Lord GOD.” You will be consoled when you see their conduct and their actions, for you will know that I have done nothing in it without cause, declares the Sovereign LORD.”
