1 In those days when the disciples (pupils) were increasing in number, the Grecian Jews among them began to grumble against the Hebraic Jews \the Hellenists began to grumble against the Hebrews/ because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 2 So the Twelve summoned all the disciples (pupils) and said, “It is unacceptable for us to neglect the word of God {Theou} in order to wait on tables. 5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen (that which surrounds), a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit {Hagiou Pneumatos}, as well as Philip (friend of horses), Prochorus (leader of the dance), Nicanor, Timon (to honor), Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism \and Nicolas, a convert of Antioch/. And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. 9 But resistance arose from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and men from the provinces of Cilicia and Asia \and those from Cilicia and Asia/. 10 but they could not stand up to his wisdom or the Spirit {Pneumati} by whom he spoke. But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking. But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.
11 Then they prompted some men to say, “We heard Stephen speak words {rhēmata} of blasphemy against Moses (drawn out) and against God {Theon}. Then they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”
12 So they stirred up the people, elders, and scribes and confronted Stephen.
