1 And his son Jehoshaphat reigns in his stead, and he strengthens himself against Israel, Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place and strengthened himself against Israel. Jehoshaphat his son succeeded him as king and strengthened himself against Israel.
2 and puts a force in all the fortified cities of Judah, and puts garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured. 3 And YHWH is with Jehoshaphat, for he has walked in the first ways of his father David, and has not sought for the Ba‘alim, The LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. 4 for he has sought for the God of his father, and he has walked in His commands, and not according to the work of Israel. but sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, and not according to the practices of Israel. but sought the God of his father and followed his commands rather than the practices of Israel.
5 And YHWH establishes the kingdom in his hand, and all Judah gives a present to Jehoshaphat, and he has riches and honor in abundance, Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand. And all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great riches and honor. The LORD established the kingdom under his control; and all Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, so that he had great wealth and honor.
6 and his heart is high in the ways of YHWH, and again he has turned aside the high places and the Asherim out of Judah. His heart was courageous in the ways of the LORD. And furthermore, he took the high places and the Asherim out of Judah. His heart was devoted to the ways of the LORD; furthermore, he removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah.
7 And in the third year of his reign he has sent for his heads, for Ben-Hail, and for Obadiah, and for Zechariah, and for Nethaneel, and for Michaiah, to teach in cities of Judah; In the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah; In the third year of his reign he sent his officials Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel and Micaiah to teach in the towns of Judah.
8 and with them the Levites: Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijath, and Tob-Adonijah—the Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests. and with them the Levites, Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah; and with these Levites, the priests Elishama and Jehoram. With them were certain Levites—Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah and Tob-Adonijah—and the priests Elishama and Jehoram.
9 And they teach in Judah, and the Scroll of the Law of YHWH [is] with them, and they go around into all cities of Judah, and teach among the people. And they taught in Judah, having the Book of the Law of the LORD with them. They went about through all the cities of Judah and taught among the people. They taught throughout Judah, taking with them the Book of the Law of the LORD; they went around to all the towns of Judah and taught the people.
10 And there is a fear of YHWH on all kingdoms of the lands that [are] around Judah, and they have not fought with Jehoshaphat; And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, and they made no war against Jehoshaphat. The fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, so that they did not go to war against Jehoshaphat.
11 and [some] from the Philistines are bringing a present to Jehoshaphat, and silver [as] tribute; also, the Arabians are bringing to him a flock of seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred male goats. Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and silver for tribute, and the Arabians also brought him 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats. Some Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute, and the Arabs brought him flocks: seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred goats.
12 And Jehoshaphat is going on and becoming very great, and he builds palaces and cities of store in Judah, And Jehoshaphat grew steadily greater. He built in Judah fortresses and store cities, Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful; he built forts and store cities in Judah
13 and he has much work in cities of Judah; and men of war, mighty men of valor, [are] in Jerusalem. and he had large supplies in the cities of Judah. He had soldiers, mighty men of valor, in Jerusalem. and had large supplies in the towns of Judah. He also kept experienced fighting men in Jerusalem.
14 And these [are] their numbers, for the house of their fathers—of Judah, heads of thousands: Adnah the head, and with him three hundred thousand mighty men of valor; This was the muster of them by fathers’ houses: Of Judah, the commanders of thousands: Adnah the commander, with 300,000 mighty men of valor; Their enrollment by families was as follows: From Judah, commanders of units of 1,000: Adnah the commander, with 300,000 fighting men;
15 and at his hand [is] Jehohanan the head, and with him two hundred and eighty thousand; and next to him Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000; next, Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000;
16 and at his hand [is] Amasiah son of Zichri, who is willingly offering himself to YHWH, and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valor. and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, a volunteer for the service of the LORD, with 200,000 mighty men of valor. next, Amasiah son of Zikri, who volunteered himself for the service of the LORD, with 200,000.
17 And of Benjamin, mighty men of valor: Eliada, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield; Of Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valor, with 200,000 men armed with bow and shield; From Benjamin: Eliada, a valiant soldier, with 200,000 men armed with bows and shields;
18 and at his hand [is] Jehozabad, and with him one hundred and eighty thousand armed ones of the host. and next to him Jehozabad with 180,000 armed for war. next, Jehozabad, with 180,000 men armed for battle.
19 These [are] those serving the king, apart from those whom the king put in the fortress cities in all of Judah. These were in the service of the king, besides those whom the king had placed in the fortified cities throughout all Judah. These were the men who served the king, besides those he stationed in the fortified cities throughout Judah.
