1 And Josaphat his son reigned in his stead, and grew strong against Israel. Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place and strengthened himself against Israel. Jehoshaphat his son succeeded him as king and strengthened himself against Israel.
2 And he placed numbers of soldiers in all the fortified cities of Juda. And he put garrisons in the land of Juda, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken. He placed forces in all the fortified cities of Judah and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa his father had captured. He stationed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah and put garrisons in Judah and in the towns of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.
3 And the Lord was with Josaphat, because he walked in the first ways of David his father: and trusted not in Baalim, The LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. 5 And the Lord established the kingdom in his hand, and all Juda brought presents to Josaphat: and he acquired immense riches, and much glory. Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand. And all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great riches and honor. The LORD established the kingdom under his control; and all Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, so that he had great wealth and honor.
6 And when his heart had taken courage for the ways of the Lord, he took away also the high places and the groves out of Juda. His heart was courageous in the ways of the LORD. And furthermore, he took the high places and the Asherim out of Judah. His heart was devoted to the ways of the LORD; furthermore, he removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah.
7 And in the third year of his reign, he sent of his princes Benhail, and Abdias, and Zacharias, and Nathanael, and Micheas, to teach in the cities of Juda: In the third year of his reign he sent his officials, Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah; In the third year of his reign he sent his officials Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel and Micaiah to teach in the towns of Judah.
8 And with them the Levites, Semeias, end Nathanias, and Zabadias, and Asael, and Semiramoth, and Jonathan, and Adonias, and Tobias, and Thobadonias Levites, and with them Elisama, and Joram priests. and with them the Levites, Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah; and with these Levites, the priests Elishama and Jehoram. With them were certain Levites—Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah and Tob-Adonijah—and the priests Elishama and Jehoram.
9 And they taught the people in Juda, having with them the book of the law of the Lord: and they went about all the cities of Juda, and instructed the people. And they taught in Judah, having the Book of the Law of the LORD with them. They went about through all the cities of Judah and taught among the people. They taught throughout Judah, taking with them the Book of the Law of the LORD; they went around to all the towns of Judah and taught the people.
10 And the fear of the Lord came upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Juda, and they durst not make war against Josaphat. And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, and they made no war against Jehoshaphat. The fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, so that they did not go to war against Jehoshaphat.
11 The Philistines also brought presents to Josaphat, and tribute in silver, and the Arabians brought him cattle, seven thousand seven hundred rams, and as many he goats. Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and silver for tribute, and the Arabians also brought him 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats. Some Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute, and the Arabs brought him flocks: seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred goats.
12 And Josaphat grew, and became exceeding great: and he built in Juda houses like towers, and walled cities. And Jehoshaphat grew steadily greater. He built in Judah fortresses and store cities, Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful; he built forts and store cities in Judah
13 And he prepared many works in the cities of Juda: and he had warriors, and valiant men in Jerusalem. and he had large supplies in the cities of Judah. He had soldiers, mighty men of valor, in Jerusalem. and had large supplies in the towns of Judah. He also kept experienced fighting men in Jerusalem.
14 Of whom this is the number of the houses and families of every one: in Juda captains of the army, Ednas the chief, and with him three hundred thousand most valiant men. This was the muster of them by fathers’ houses: Of Judah, the commanders of thousands: Adnah the commander, with 300,000 mighty men of valor; Their enrollment by families was as follows: From Judah, commanders of units of 1,000: Adnah the commander, with 300,000 fighting men;
15 After him Johanan the captain, and with him two hundred and eighty thousand. and next to him Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000; next, Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000;
16 And after him was Amasias the son of Zechri, consecrated to the Lord, and with him were two hundred thousand valiant men. and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, a volunteer for the service of the LORD, with 200,000 mighty men of valor. next, Amasiah son of Zikri, who volunteered himself for the service of the LORD, with 200,000.
17 After him was Eliada valiant in battle, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield. Of Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valor, with 200,000 men armed with bow and shield; From Benjamin: Eliada, a valiant soldier, with 200,000 men armed with bows and shields;
18 After him also was Jozabad, and with him a hundred and eighty thousand ready for war. and next to him Jehozabad with 180,000 armed for war. next, Jehozabad, with 180,000 men armed for battle.
19 All these were at the hand of the king, beside others, whom he had put in the walled cities, in all Juda. These were in the service of the king, besides those whom the king had placed in the fortified cities throughout all Judah. These were the men who served the king, besides those he stationed in the fortified cities throughout Judah.
