Psalm 40
NLT Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry.1I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.2He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.3He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.
Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols.4Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!
O LORD my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.5You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.
You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand — you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings.6In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.
Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures:7Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:
I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”8I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”
I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O LORD, well know.9I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD.
I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness.10I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.
LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.11As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!
For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage.12For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me.
Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me.13Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me!
May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace.14Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt!
Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, “Aha! We’ve got him now!”15Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”
But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!”16But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the LORD!”
As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay.17As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God!
