To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will guard my ways, Lest I sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, While the wicked are before me.”1For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Davidic psalm. I said, "I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence."
I was mute with silence, I held my peace even from good; And my sorrow was stirred up.2I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from speaking good, and my pain intensified.
My heart was hot within me; While I was musing, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:"
“LORD, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am.4 LORD, reveal to me the end of my life and the number of my days. Let me know how short-lived I am.
Indeed, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Selah5You, indeed, have made my days short in length, and my life span as nothing in Your sight. Yes, every mortal man is only a vapor. Selah "
Surely every man walks about like a shadow; Surely they busy themselves in vain; He heaps up riches, And does not know who will gather them.6Certainly, man walks about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they frantically rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.
“And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.7Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.
Deliver me from all my transgressions; Do not make me the reproach of the foolish.8Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools.
I was mute, I did not open my mouth, Because it was You who did it.9I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done.
Remove Your plague from me; I am consumed by the blow of Your hand.10Remove Your torment from me; I fade away because of the force of Your hand.
When with rebukes You correct man for iniquity, You make his beauty melt away like a moth; Surely every man is vapor. Selah11You discipline a man with punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; every man is only a vapor. Selah "
“Hear my prayer, O LORD, And give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with You, A sojourner, as all my fathers were.12Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am a foreigner residing with You, a temporary resident like all my fathers.
Remove Your gaze from me, that I may regain strength, Before I go away and am no more.”13Turn Your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone."
