To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions. | 1Be gracious to me, God, according to your faithful love; according to your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion. |
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin. | 2Completely wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. |
For I acknowledge my transgressions, And my sin is always before me. | 3For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me. |
Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge. | 4Against you--you alone--I have sinned and done this evil in your sight. So you are right when you pass sentence; you are blameless when you judge. |
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. | 5Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me. |
Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. | 6Surely you desire integrity in the inner self, and you teach me wisdom deep within. |
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. | 7Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. |
Make me hear joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken may rejoice. | 8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. |
Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities. | 9Turn your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt. |
Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. | 10God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. |
Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. | 11Do not banish me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. |
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit. | 12Restore the joy of your salvation to me, and sustain me by giving me a willing spirit. |
Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You. | 13Then I will teach the rebellious your ways, and sinners will return to you. |
Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, The God of my salvation, And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. | 14Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God--God of my salvation--and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. |
O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise. | 15Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. |
For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. | 16You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it; you are not pleased with a burnt offering. |
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise. | 17The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. You will not despise a broken and humbled heart, God. |
Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. | 18In your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build the walls of Jerusalem. |
Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, With burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar. | 19Then you will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on your altar. |
