Psalm 39

New International VersionHolman Christian Standard Bible
For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David. I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth while in the presence of the wicked."1For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Davidic psalm. I said, "I will guard my ways so that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are in my presence."
So I remained utterly silent, not even saying anything good. But my anguish increased;2I was speechless and quiet; I kept silent, even from speaking good, and my pain intensified.
my heart grew hot within me. While I meditated, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:3My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, a fire burned. I spoke with my tongue:"
"Show me, LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.4 LORD, reveal to me the end of my life and the number of my days. Let me know how short-lived I am.
You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure.5You, indeed, have made my days short in length, and my life span as nothing in Your sight. Yes, every mortal man is only a vapor. Selah "
"Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom; in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth without knowing whose it will finally be.6Certainly, man walks about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they frantically rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.
"But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.7Now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You.
Save me from all my transgressions; do not make me the scorn of fools.8Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the taunt of fools.
I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this.9I am speechless; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done.
Remove your scourge from me; I am overcome by the blow of your hand.10Remove Your torment from me; I fade away because of the force of Your hand.
When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin, you consume their wealth like a moth-- surely everyone is but a breath.11You discipline a man with punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is precious to him; every man is only a vapor. Selah "
"Hear my prayer, LORD, listen to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. I dwell with you as a foreigner, a stranger, as all my ancestors were.12Hear my prayer, LORD, and listen to my cry for help; do not be silent at my tears. For I am a foreigner residing with You, a temporary resident like all my fathers.
Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again before I depart and am no more."13Turn Your angry gaze from me so that I may be cheered up before I die and am gone."
